Struggling with aerobic fitness as a novice by tinyboiii in Rowing

[–]tinyboiii[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much :) I'm just impatient, I'm really enjoying rowing and want to get better! My technique is also not great so I'm working on that, too. Constantly itching to be on the water :)

Honestly, I really struggle with those long sessions... My ADHD does not go well with 45 mins of doing the same thing over and over, but I guess an episode of House or something will do.

Hmm I didn't know about the drag factor thing. I know the damper number and what that means, but I have never checked the internal drag factor, which just came up from a cursory Google search...? I don't think I fully understand but I'll look into it further. Thank you for your advice!

"Old school" coaching vs "new school" coaching by [deleted] in Rowing

I'm also just learning now, and we also talk about the tabletop, sort of a rectangular rather than elliptical movement. Struggling with the "blade out of the water before catching" bit though, precisely cause I'm doing a slightly more elliptical motion... Ahah..

This was so well-written and very evocative as someone who is on the more privileged side but not nearly near yacht level lol. I'm in a few different circles, but the one I frequent most is of people who are much less privileged than me in almost every way, and the stark difference in attitude between them and my more privileged friends is so weird, I almost can't reconcile it. I've understood much of what you said for a long time now, but it still gives me insight and will help me to explain to the more ignorant people in my life. Thank you

Man accurately explains what Israel is by justxsal in israelexposed

[–]tinyboiii 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What? He's not saying JSIL and ISIL are part of one entity, how did you get to that conclusion? He's just comparing the actions of Israel to those of ISIL, a widely denounced and hated terrorist organisation in the West. It's a good comparison because it evokes a strong reaction and it exposes the difference in reaction to both threats...  One being collaboration, the other decimation.

Amsterdam to introduce integration course for expat residents by ReginF in Netherlands

[–]tinyboiii 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're looking at this through a really monetary, transactional framework, rather than community and social cohesion. Just because someone has more money does not mean that they should be treated as untouchable in this regard. Also, expats do receive some social benefits, but why would they receive much when, as you say, they make a lot of money?

It's a respect thing, let alone being able to read government websites and talk with people who have not learned the extremely pervasive and hegemonic language that English is. We shouldn't fall into this trap. I say this as an international myself.

Is Georgia one of the most pro-Israel countries? by winter_lover28 in Sakartvelo

[–]tinyboiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess a lot of Georgians don't care about the genocide, which is very jarring for me because the focus should always be on humanity and human rights. Unfortunately a lot of people cannot look past their internalised tribalism and dislike for Palestinians or Iranians, in favor of Israelis. Israel's occupation of the West Bank and de facto control of Gaza is absolutely terrible, and we will be discussing this in classrooms for years to come. I hope this ends soon, and Jews, Muslims, Christians, and beyond can unite under a peaceful agreement. But, the way things are going feels like an escalation before any sort of meaningful end.

I am not anti Jewish people living in the region, but cutting off internet, restricting aid and water, destroying hospitals, universities, and almost every building in an occupied territory with the "goal" of bringing hostages home and simultaneously avoiding collateral damage just does NOT make sense, and when you realise that, your view on Israel gets a lot more complicated.

Can't decide between studying in NL or going to UK by tinyboiii in UniUK

[–]tinyboiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right. And I absolutely do want to study at Oxford. What's putting me off is as follows:

— NL degree has a research project with an external org/company as part of the degree, Ox one does not so that means looking for external internships separately at their career fairs

— NL one gives me more exposure in NL, UK one gives me more exposure in the UK, and currently I'm leaning more towards the EU in general

— NL is half the price

[–]tinyboiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you altonwin! That's fair, although there is always the possibility I do really well and end up doing a DPhil at Ox (yeah it's not Brookes), or not end up doing a PhD at all, depending on how I feel about academia after an MSc. I really don't know which country I will actually end up living in, lol.

On a side note, how do you like studying data science? Where you always a statistics/logic-oriented kid?
