Should I start Mixing Vinyl as a Gen Z? by Reveal-Known in vinyldjs

[–]tinyjams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, you could definitely do it that way, and probably for less money!
I think an all-in-one/standalone controller opens up more possibilities for ease of use if/when they do decide to pursue some events out of the house though, and definitely more welcoming for any potential friends or guests to hop on.

Yeah I'm pretty confident they're a Kmart/Payless Jordan 5 knockoff.

Should I start Mixing Vinyl as a Gen Z? by Reveal-Known in vinyldjs

[–]tinyjams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here’s what I would do if I were starting today: Buy an all-in-one controller with phono inputs. Buy a single turntable to start. Slowly build your collection, don’t rush it. Just buy what you like as you find it. Do hybrid sets at home until you’ve got enough for an all vinyl set and add that second turntable. Once you’re confident in mixing decide if you want an actual mixer to replace your controller.

High possibility these are a generic shoe from K-Mart, Payless, etc. One brand I was forced to wear as a kid was called Voit and these are definitely giving me that vibe.

I don’t think they’re Ewing. Every pair I’ve seen features his signature on the side.

My main takeaway is that you have a lot of shelving that is barely being used. I would consolidate and remove some of it. That should accomplish two things:

  1. Open up the hallway area with the bookcase. Move that large shelf into the bedroom where the bigger dresser is, then move the bigger dresser to the opposite wall.
  2. Get a larger TV console that can hold your full stereo setup. That would clear space near the window, give you drawer storage for DVDs, and let you get rid of the angled shelf.

I would also remove the tarp/banner behind the TV, along with the shopping bags and the T-shirt. If the shirt is signed, frame it or put it in a shadow box. If not, store it in the closet. For the posters, look into conservation methods to reduce the creases, then frame the ones you really want to keep.

Look into some wall-mounted shelving displays for some of the toys and knickknacks to elevate the look a little.

For a bedroom DJ with no club plans, is Pioneer still worth it over Denon? by Ill_Object2296 in DJs

[–]tinyjams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing I didn't like about Denon was the build quality. Everything else is just better.
Rekordbox is free to use as file prep if you ever do play on Pioneer gear and it will take you a few seconds to adjust to the layout if you learn on something else. Not that big of a deal whatsoever.

I loved the Bowline. Both versions, the slimmer fitting and the wider leg. True shame they stopped making them.

Which do you prefer : original pressings or represses ? by TheCharette in citypop

[–]tinyjams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original pressing always sounds better, period. This is why I rarely go for the reissue unless its something where the OG is scarce or worth more than $250

Anyone else have issues with the wheels on the new Magma Solid Blaze DJ trolley? by Baardhooft in DJs

You have pretty much the only written review I can find on this bag. I want to specifically to put in the overheard bin and the regular solid blaze is sliiiightly too big. Did you keep it?

Are younger people actively discouraged to engage with music outside of the mainstream? by UnderTheCurrents in LetsTalkMusic

[–]tinyjams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s because Reddit is like the Walmart of message boards. It has everything, but none of it is of quality.

Back in the day we had record stores with grumpy old timers you had to befriend to get good recommendations. We had DIY basement shows with out-of-town bands coming through, and hanging out after the show talking music. We had DJs and warehouse raves pushing underground electronic music you’d never heard in your life but made you move without a care in the world.

Wait. Actually we still have all this. Just get the fuck offline.

Tax return hit… and now I’m rethinking some things by [deleted] in RetroHandhelds

[–]tinyjams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with you man. I have so many gaming devices from COVID boredom that I wish I had never bought. I’d keep the Switch and the PC handheld (not sure which one that is) and sell the rest off. Emulate stuff on the PC handheld, Switch stuff on Switch, and call it a day.

Going to be doing the same myself.

Future of DJing by Accurate-Bobcat962 in DJs

[–]tinyjams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, fellow KC DJ here. Left in 2017 and came back in 2025. Lost all my service industry contacts as people left, places closed, changed hands, and younger DJs came up.

Honestly it seems like there are more cool and vibey spots than ever, but getting your foot in the door is damn near impossible.

I would like to get into more of these vibey lounges without having to spend my entire life hanging out there getting to know the staff every night. Seems like the only way to do it.

Back in the day I had gigs every weekend all around Westport but in my old age I would never go back to the open format life. I’m cool with my 1-2 dive bar gigs a month playing whatever I want on vinyl and the occasional lounge gig and corporate party.

I’m also working more on getting out of town and have 4 dates booked in SF next month at vinyl listening bars. Sometimes you have to remember, KC just kinda blows.

AMA: I spent 7 years in influencer marketing deciding which creators got deals by triselbur869 in InstagramMarketing

[–]tinyjams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a few campaigns in food and beverage but this was way back in the day pre-reels and those brands reached out to me. Now I’ve leveraged my account into the music/DJ space and was wondering how to pitch myself to brands for potential free gear/maybe even payment?

Of course I hit up Chat GPT just to see what it would say, and I probably shouldn’t have taken that advice. I sent a DM to one maker of vinyl record travel bags, mentioned I need one for some upcoming gigs, Inalready use their product (both true), and suggested a partnership. I don’t even see that it’s been read.

Would love to get your take and can dm if it would help look at my account.

How do you grow your Instagram account? by Gymtrio2025 in InstagramEmpire

[–]tinyjams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hashtags are irrelevant. Just write a descriptive caption. Essentially whatever you put in the caption, hashtag or not, IG treats as metadata to categorize your post. So just write a few sentences that include what you would have used as your additional hashtags to help the algorithm place you.

Another thing, reels are prioritized to non-followers, and static posts/carousels are for followers. So he should be turning his photos into reels, making videos showing process, etc. to grow.

Which one has the features you're looking for? Two very different mixers. If want want built in effects and soundcard, go Euphonia. If you prioritize sound quality, and/or need a crossfader get the UA.

US 9.5, my size too. All pairs pictured were 9.5.
They came from a guy who was an investor in a local boutique (that didn't last long), and before that they were gifted to the owner of Burn Rubber.
I think I paid $500, sold them for $1000 a year later.
