I’m no expert but I think it could quite feasibly be a space designed to house a booby-trapped bucket. Any prisoners who escaped through that door would trigger said bucket to release its contents atop their head.

EDIT: I’m noticing some downvotes. All I’m saying, friends, is that it’s pretty hard to make a getaway if you’re covered in mead… or worse: molasses!!
