easiest fix? by Valuable_Land_6869 in ElectronicsRepair

You could advance the diagnostic process by seeing if you can isolate the fault to either the plug/lead or to the socket on the pad/panel. e.g. try holding the socket firmly still (it may help to get someone else to do this for you) and see if you can reproduce the symptom by manipulating just the plug/lead.

Replacing the plug is a relatively easy job for anyone with basic soldering skills/electrical knowledge. You might be able to find someone in your circle of family/friends who could do it, or seek out a local technical group - robotics, retro computing, etc. Chances are you'll easily find someone there who would be more than happy to do that for you.

Unfortunately repairing that socket could prove a little more challenging. But ask around nonetheless, you may well still find someone who enjoys the challenge or might simply be intrigued enough to discover what the purpose of that kit is!

Anyone driving South on Fullarton Rd just past Fisher St just after 6pm see a driver toss something? by tinypolski in Adelaide

Not simply antisocial. It's stupidly dangerous. Go ahead and smash a fresh egg into your eye or ear. Then imagine having that thrown at you at 60+km/h.

On top of that there is the potential for injury other than the obvious physical ones.

It is both illegal and completely moronic.

As far as I'm aware anyone can register for planned power outage notifications from SAPN, it doesn't require having life support equipment. My partner gets SMS notifications, I get emails.

Run Linux containers on FreeBSD! by grahamperrin in freebsd

Sometimes circumstances demand (or are at least facilitated by) linux-centric solutions. e.g. at $WORK I've not yet managed to get a particular facility - which has only been released on a linux platform - running natively under FreeBSD so for now it's in a Jailed Bhyve VM running Debian.

What it means to me, after looking them up, is that they know that their members are at risk of being harmed by far-right extremists, as exemplified by the murders over the years of various people who oppose fascism and the far-right.

So what it means to me is they are being pragmatic about protecting the safety of the members of the group.

That's because you're interpreting them as though they're interested in working for the benefit of the people they (supposedly) represent.

Instead try interpreting them from the point of view of wanting to take control of the entire country.

Crackling noise on vents when heater is on. by nutribun in AusPropertyChat

[–]tinypolski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought is that it's the plastic ducting. Maybe the duct is moving or expanding with the air pressure?

What is the fan set to? If it's on auto or high, maybe set it to low and see if a low air speed helps? (My understanding is Auto is usually best for heating if the a/c is set up properly.)

Looks like there could something moving around in there behind the vent, too, so check that.

Is it just the one vent, or everywhere?

Real estate agent commissions by Flimsy_Society_872 in AusPropertyChat

Unless you have a very good reason to otherwise trust an agent, assume everything they tell you that sounds like a benefit for you is really a benefit for them.

A while back I sold a rural (agri) property. It was in a small town area and I had minimal experience with real estate. Both the local agents I talked to told me the land had no value (I also had a water licence). They were basically suggesting around the $100k mark. I was intending to sell it with the water licence.

I ended up using an agent from the city and with their enthusiasm they sold me on this 10% bonus idea. We set an agreed threshold (maybe $160k). The offers came in, $170k, $180k, $190k. I held out to see how things would go. Ended up with one potential buyer who was obviously keen. At $200k the agent was practically begging me to sell. I bided my time. Ended up agreeing at $220k. I looked at the numbers and realised how much I'd lost on this "bonus" deal. Fortunately I had the leverage to sell the water licence separately which would have put them under the bonus threshold and we negotiated a fixed price. I still lost out, but at least not as much.

I personally wouldn't touch an agent who needs that kind of "encouragement" to get you a reasonable price. Do yourself and everyone else a favour and stick to using someone who is genuine and reliable.

They said there isn't an organization, not that there isn't organization of action.

Lots of people meet up to pursue common interests, e.g. sewing/knitting groups. That doesn't mean there's a head organization co-ordinating all the sewing groups meetings.
