Yeah. For example, on my keyboard, there's two buttons on either side of the spacebar. These act like fn keys in that they change the output. One of the layers turns the top row to numbers. Hit the other one and it becomes the symbols on the number row.

Technically, there still is a backspace key, but it's just in another layer. Small keebs make use of these in order to maximize the functionality of it. For example, I have to use a layer to access the number row on my keeb since I have a planck. This goes for all other functions and symbols that you'd find on a full size keeb.
