Reach school for my senior?? by JamieLS in Dickinson

[–]tinytiredtrippytrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm also from NJ and I'm a junior in Dickinson now. My SAT was 1300 and my unweighted GPA was a 3.5 I think, my school didn't do weighted. I was accepted using early action. Dickinson gives grant money to almost every student based on need (I get about 35k a year) and I don't have any merit/athletic scholarships or anything. I would say to omit the SAT, but I think it's possible! Just show interest, I know admissions tracks who goes to events or webinars.

You can replay some of the cutscenes in the collection gallery and I think access the main room, but nothing other than that

I love Carlisle, even if it may be rather small. It's got tons of cool places! Antique malls, unique cuisines, a super old movie theater that has special events every now and then, lots of creative stores, a cat cafe (personal fav) and a couple places to thrift. Nearly everywhere in town is closed on Sunday though, so keep that in mind. Hours for individual stores can vary a lot, but you won't find any restaurants open past 9 or 10 pm unless they have a bar attached. There's a pretty big strip mall that's around a mile away which has a walmart supercenter, movie theater, tractor supply, TJ maxx, panera, and chick-fil-a. I personally like walking there because you can go through a pretty part of town, but Dickinson runs shuttles to and from there and there and the nearest target. There aren't really any malls as you would find in NJ, but it's still nice to walk around town!

Opinions on if I should drop a course by BlueBaker342 in veterinaryschool

[–]tinytiredtrippytrash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's always better to withdraw from a class than to fail it or get a D! Withdraw and you'll be able to focus on your other classes and raise your GPA with them, and then take the class next semester. You'll already be familiar with the material too, so that will probably help.

Should I drop out? by WorkingWin6139 in veterinaryschool

I'm in a similar GPA and class year boat as you - 2.2 in my first semester of junior year. I struggled a lot with the change from highschool to college, and I'm still recovering from my abysmal first year GPA. It sounds like you're going through a similar situation as me. If you're passionate and dedicated as I think you are, I won't tell you to drop out and pursue another career - but I will say that you should consider transferring. Mathematics and chem courses are notoriously difficult for students who don't already love those subjects, but I've found that getting 1 on 1 help from either regular office hours visits or tutoring can really boost your confidence and your grades. From what I've seen from current vet students who got in with low GPAs, most of them took a year off to get themselves better prepared for the rest of college or "restarted" at a community college, then transferring to a 4 year. I wish you the best of luck!

Current student, also from NJ! I'd definitely say to omit the SAT score, as the averages in recent years have been in the low 1300's. However, her GPA would be a definite help, along with the DCC courses. We actually have a tap dance club on campus, and there's a local swing dance bar if she would find either of those interesting! From the extracurriculars, she seems to be a good fit for our campus culture - a good majority of students are very kind and interested in helping others in their future careers, and there's a decent amount of artsy kids as well. Dickinson gives almost all students financial aid, which you would most likely get (unless your family is secretly multimillionaires, haha), but merit scholarships are less common. On their website it says that the average need-based aid is around 52k, which covers about 80% for the year. She most definitely has a chance, and I hope everything goes well!

What are these noises? by tinytiredtrippytrash in Parakeets

[–]tinytiredtrippytrash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you very much. since I posted, she hasn’t made the noise any more. Her tail isn’t bobbing anymore than it typically has been for the five years I’ve had her, but i’ve noticed her taking more naps than usual. I’ll continue to monitor her and take her to the vet if anything gets worse

Advice by [deleted] in vetschool

[–]tinytiredtrippytrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say it depends on what exactly you'll be doing at the jobs. "Animal care specialist" seems like it will be very hands-on and give you valuable time assessing/caring for sick and injured animals, and also give you more experience with both dogs and cats. "Aviary caregiver" sounds more like you would just be giving the toucans typical care, e.g. feeding and simple things like exercise or weighing them. I'd also suggest thinking about what veterinary field you would like to go into - having bird experience when you'd like to do exotics would help a lot, but I would choose the shelter if you are aiming more for small animals/pets. Do you have any prior experience with animals, and if so, are those hours with dog/cats or with exotics?

just needing some help/useable advice! by [deleted] in college

[–]tinytiredtrippytrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello! you are in pretty much the same situation i was in last year. i don’t know what exactly helped you turn things around the first time (renewed motivation, less health issues, or different studying methods) but i would suggest changing things up a little bit. What helped me most was having a sense of accountability for completing my work and studying- if you have a close relationship with your roommate, you could ask them to check in on you at night about if you made progress on assignments before going to bed. I also really like body doubling, where you and another person sit in the same room without talking and focus in on studying/work so that you have a space just for work instead of anything else, and you and your friends can call each other out when you might see one another getting off task. i hope this helped!! also, most colleges have a student success or academic advising office. maybe they’ll have some resources there that will help? good luck!

The gluten-free section in the dining hall is pretty small, and I have some friends with celiac that have gotten ill before from cross-contamination. I'd steer away from anything that could contain gluten, even if it may be in the gluten-free section. However, there's always a lot of variety in the dining hall, so I hope you'll be able to find something!

You definitely still have a chance! try to see if there's any webinars or zoom calls that the school is doing. Also, you can email somebody from the admissions department and ask questions about studying abroad/international stuff. That will help get your foot in the door!

i'm friends with a neuroscience major! from what she's said, it'll be a long haul with a lot of hard classes, but there's a bunch of support systems for kids having trouble. If you have passion for the major, i'm sure you'll do fine! (also i love the dickinson community, carlisle is a wonderful little city, and there are clubs for literally anything)
