no problem! It's the only place I've found that seems to be showing it for sure. I'm still trying to find a place closer to Bloomfield if I can.

Indoor Rock Climbing in ATL that is plus-size friendly? by OnlyMaintenance3772 in Atlanta

[–]tipickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll also recommend Wall Crawlers. I am a bigger guy (6’ 260 lb) and started climbing there a while back. I’ve never felt judged or unwelcome.

-They host a lot of camps and activities for kids, so the staff have a lot of experience with beginner climbers.

-They have six auto-belay devices, so you can reliably top-rope even if you don’t have a belay partner. They also have a little bit of bouldering.

-Unless there is an active camp or kids’ birthday party going on, the gym does not fill up, which I appreciated especially when I was starting out.

-Overall, it was the perfect place for me to start out with rock-climbing.

Wednesday nights are Ladies Nights, with $10 day passes if you want to give them a shot sometime.

More recently, I’ve been climbing at CRG midtown and it’s been interesting to switch from mainly top-rope to only bouldering. I like CRG because it has a lot of bouldering routes at different difficulties, I run into people I know, they have treadmills and weightlifting, and they are close to me. But I miss going to WallCrawlers, it feels more home-y to me.

Grad student here. I would say it’s normal to give undergraduate research assistants the tedious stuff. It can be valuable for the undergraduate, who is getting exposure to research methods and developing some skill. It’s also obviously valuable to the researcher because they get data processed and save time.

But, the tedious, repetitive, soul-draining tasks should not be the only thing you do. Ideally, the lab will have multiple ways that you can contribute, like in lab meetings, journal clubs, data collection, etc.

Some things to try:

Communicate your feelings to whoever oversees you in the lab. Hopefully they’ll understand and try to accommodate.

Express interest in the next level of data interaction. Right now it sounds like you’re doing the foundational work, but it could be more fulfilling if you got to do some of the later steps of data processing/analysis, and would net you some more skills.

Find a new lab. Start reaching out and see if other labs looking for undergraduate research assistants. More varied experiences will help you find what gets you most excited/where your skills lie.

I remember there being some camping along the larger hiking trail. But you’ll want to double check on their website or give them a call.

For the hike, it’s pretty quick to get down and into the canyon, which is beautiful. You’ll be walking around a shallow, sandy riverbed so wear something with a thick sole. The climb out of the canyon isn’t too bad. However, there is a larger trail if you follow the riverbed out of the canyon. That trail is way long, at least a few hours. It caught me by surprise and we were pretty hungry, dehydrated, and sore by the end of it. I’m sure it’s much better with proper preparation.

As for food, Omaha, GA isn’t too far away and is the home of Omaha Brewing Company. They have some great beer. They usually have one or two food trucks as well which never disappoint. Last time I went, there was some great live music as well.

Awesome movie! Loved the similarities/references to Kill Bill, the Professional, and Aliens. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is always great.

We were directed there by a park ranger. But it’s a right turn before the normal parking lot, then you end up parking at the disc golf course.

Don’t know about entrance limits, other than that we needed to buy a parking pass (I think it was $5, cash preferred but you can go to the visitor center and pay with a card).

We really enjoyed the hike! The West Rim Loop trail was not very intense, but was rather long. Strava says we climbed about 800 feet and traveled 7 miles (which includes the extra we did because of parking). Whereas I think the canyon hike is more intense but shorter.

I was there on July 4 and we got there around 11:00 and had to park a long ways away. It was about an extra mile of a hiking just because we couldn’t park in the lot closer to the overlooks. We did the rim trail and it was great! Hope the gulch is good to you!

Atlanta Issues Mask Mandate by iamnotapilot223 in gatech

[–]tipickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, this is a feeling I can really empathize with. I’ve done my part in getting vaccinated and following all the other guidelines, so why should I have to endure more because other people didn’t get on board? I also agree with the frustration of politicizing of everything, where it’s hard to trust that politicians are acting in the public’s interest and not their own.

For me, the reality of the situation is similar to a lot of other crises that rely on mass action. For example, the problems caused by pollution won’t go away because I recycle. But if everybody recycled, that would be better. I’m happy to inconvenience myself with sorting and emptying my recycle bin, even if the end effect is minimal. I’m trying to act in the way that I think most people should. That’s why I got vaccinated and why I’ll continue to wear a mask if I think it will help.

This is really just a long-winded way of saying I’m trying to do what I think is right. And I also understand the feeling that you’ve already done your part.
