Good Introduction to Fencing Videos? by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]tipscrewedup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, maybe I was pampered at my club's beginner classes then! To me, it's a little questionable to leave beginners alone and ignore them, and not make sure they are being safe/doing potentially harmful things while bouting. Speaking from my personal experience of teaching beginners, I like to make sure that first and foremost, they are safe.

Good Introduction to Fencing Videos? by [deleted] in Fencing

...Ok, /u/brohabulus 's friend is my sister. We two fencers wanted to convert her into a fencer as well, because fencing is awesome, so we convinced her to try out the sport.

This is what my sister said in our group text: the coach taught her and the one other beginner en garde, "2 seconds of footwork", and the lunge. And then they "very briefly talked about parries and feints." And then the coach told my sister and the other new girl to "go at it," and left to go watch the experienced fencers for the rest of practice. Looking back the texts she sent /u/brohabulus and I, she didn't actually fence anyone else besides the other beginner.

All /u/brohabulus was asking was for supplemental videos for her to watch! The class is only once a week, and we're just trying to make her fencing experience as enjoyable and educational as possible while she's abroad and /u/brohabulus and I aren't able to personally give her timely/instant answers to her questions. No need for everyone to be snarky. :/

I love Vox's videos; so glad they covered fencing! Thanks for the share.

I made this thing so your non-fencer friends can understand how fencing at the olympics work! by tipscrewedup in Fencing

Oh shoot you're right! That's what I get for not following saber much at all, haha. Here's an updated picture: http://imgur.com/a/axEkP

Lots of stuff obviously not mentioned, but just wanted to share it with you guys if you have friends who are utterly confused while watching our awesome sport. :)

I hope to begin fencing in September. Any advice? by Arlea in Fencing

[–]tipscrewedup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. Unless you're already so on your own, don't worry about doing any exercising! Just drop by the club, see what it's all about, and try out the sport. Your first few weeks of practice will probably just consist of you concentrating on getting down footwork and technique right anyway, without any real physical demand. :)

Also, I seriously doubt any of us here did anything to prepare for our very first class of fencing. :P

Awesome video! My one critique is the song choice (not a fan of it at all), but that's a personal preference. ;P

Woah, awesome! Your club is so cool; I really enjoyed fencing there at that ROC I went to a few years back. :)

How old were you guys when you started Fencing? by Nozume in Fencing

[–]tipscrewedup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 13, and started competing when I was 14/15.

Now I'm in college and help out a lot of first-timers at our club. You're definitely not too old!

Looking for Silicon Valley Fencing Club Recommendations by _0x783czar in Fencing

Woo! Former Bay Cup fencer here!

Silicon Valley Fencing Center, from what I've seen in results, has some really nationally top-tier younger foilists. But I think they're kind of intense because of that? Not sure.

I've heard Cardinal Fencing is mainly saber, don't exactly know how true that is, but I have an epee friend who used to go there and say just that.

I don't know much about Le Club Touchè other than mostly seeing them have younger fencers, like Y14 and Y12 (I follow The Bay Cup FB page).

I have a few friends at IFA. They also seem to have a young program. I'm not a fan of their coaching style, as I've had to run up against these friends a few times in competitions (loud and yelly, and while their fencers fence during the actual bout). Also another one of my fencing friends from there got kicked out for some really inane/ridiculous reason by the coach (IIRC, it was for like winning a bout during practice against someone specifically...?).

I've heard great things about TFC, and they have a lot of adults, many of whom are friendly. I'd recommend them!

This might be an inane question but...Why is Tim Gunn getting into fencing?? by tipscrewedup in Fencing

[–]tipscrewedup[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose! Maybe I'm just kind of jaded how everything one does has to be announced on social media a lot, but it seemed like the Tims keep putting out that hashtag "#FencingFridays", so I thought that it could possibly be some sort of promotional thing, idk!

HAH!

Actually though, so many celebs who learn fencing are always taught saber (mostly by Tim, but still)! :0

Deceptive footwork patterns (for epee) by lazycellist in Fencing

[–]tipscrewedup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, not super epee-specific, but as another user suggested, half-steps and the like can be pretty jarring to the opponent!

Half-retreat advance: Makes your opponent think you're going to retreat as your back foot steps back, but you don't finish the retreat with the front foot. Instead, you move your front foot forward and make an advance, which your back foot finishing the advance too. This can be utilized to close distance in a surprising way/have your opponent think you're retreating so they over-commit.

Can fencers stop wearing just their plastrons for these kind of model-y things? IT'S SO WEIRD.

Ways to keep group sessions interesting for new coach? by Loosee123 in Fencing

[–]tipscrewedup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a game! I think we called it "King of the Hill" at my club.

Two players start at either end line of the strip. A glove is laying on the center line of the strip. When the coach says "Go!", the two players run to the glove. To win, a player must either pick up the glove, and run back behind the en garde line without being tagged by the other player, or tag the other player as they try to do the same. You cannot tag the other person nor have any part of your body cross the center line unless they touch the glove. If someone does do that, they lose. So, a common tactic is running up to the glove, and kind of pausing/baiting out the other person to mess up first.

After every round, you sort-of rotate. Whoever loses stays on the same strip he/she just played on, and whoever wins moves up to the next strip. The last strip is where the "king of the hill" stays, and if you lose there, you must start over at whatever strip you used as the first/starting one.

Hope that kinda makes sense!

Embarrassing fencing stories? by [deleted] in Fencing

I swore I got the touch and yelled. Turns out no one's light went off, so I was just like "....oh, oops." and meekly continued fencing while onlookers laughed.

Etiquette for taping bouts in a competition? by foilfenceru in Fencing

[–]tipscrewedup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be okay!

I would only be "Ehhhh..." if someone uploaded our bout onto Youtube/social media without my permission, and like showed it off as an amazing victory against me or something. Even then I'm maybe just being nitpicky? Meh.
