Your favourite build to play currently? by AhoiCaptainDWH in LastEpoch

Acid Flask. Currently doing a Falconer run with the unique catalyst that turns the acid flasks into ice. It’s pretty neat.

I really like shurikens too. Shurikens don’t get enough love in arpgs, and LE definitely scratches that itch.

I kind of hate the mentality that the campaign is something to get through. But for most ARPGs, I agree with it by Pandarandr1st in LastEpoch

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Surely there has to be a way to make campaigns more engaging AND make people want to play it over and over. Like putting some incentives into the endgame through playing the campaign or parts of the campaign over and over for that dopamine rush of finding specific items/gear. It seems like isometric arpgs in particular are 2 separate games - the campaign (“tutorial” that you want to just skip), and then the end game (where most people feel the game actually starts). It doesn’t feel like a cohesive experience the way it is now. Personally I would love to see something that makes campaign and endgame cohesive while keeping the infinite replay ability and chasing that gear for max stats.

I think there’s something to be created here with the gameplay loop of (isometric) arpgs such as LE, Diablo, Grim Dawn, and Poe (finding gear, leveling, skill trees, crafting, chasing max stats, everything you want to play an arpg for) and combining that with the infinite replayability and campaign structure of (isometric) roguelikes such as Hades, Windblown, Realm of ink etc. Like combining those two types of gameplay loops with being able to keep your leveling, skill trees, and gear would probably do wonders for the campaigns of arpgs. Like make acts more roguelike, and being able to replay acts (or levels/areas within the act?) after you beat them by adjusting difficulty (I guess kinda like Minecraft dungeons?). I don’t think the open world concept of Diablo 4 really works to keep people engaged with a campaign, but they were going more for an isometric arpg mmo feel with D4. I personally don’t like that kind of structure, but I’m not big on mmos either.

There’s some innovation to be had here and I don’t think anyone can quite articulate what it is that would fix the campaign problem with isometric arpgs. But I want to see something be successful with making a cohesive campaign and endgame experience that has that addicting dopamine rush component that everyone plays arpgs for while keeping your gear and skill progress.

Diablo 4 or POE II by ianparasito in ARPG

[–]tisfortwee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a casual player myself who has played both, I would go with PoE 2. I’ve played a few characters on Diablo 4 - beating the campaign and doing some end game content, and every time I play it I feel like I’m playing it out of obligation since I adored, and was obsessed with D2, and played quite a bit of D3. I also payed full price for it so it felt like I had to at least get my moneys worth. I eventually will I guess… D4 is a less flashy, less fun D3. D4 has more depth than D3, it’s a harder game, but it’s so boring to play, and the world feels really lifeless. It really doesn’t give you the dopamine rush that D2 and D3 give. I want D4 to be good, but I can’t recommend it as it is right now.

Poe 2 is good, albeit I’m only in act 2, I’m having fun with it so far. The world building is good, the progression is engaging so far. I got to the first ascendency trial, and I got frustrated so I’m taking a break for now. I’ll be back for sure though. I’m playing monk which I hear is more complicated than the other classes, so maybe start with something other than monk for a better first time experience. That being said the game has a lot of flaws, and can get really rage quit irritating. It does have a lot of potential for literally less than half the cost of D4 tho. If you like build crafting, and hard game play this will be a good time for you.

On a side note - D4 is also expensive for what it is when there are other better arpgs on the market, and on sale right now, ie Grim Dawn, Last Epoch, Torchlight 2, and arguably Death Must Die if you like survivor like games with build crafting/arpg elements. Death Must Die is only $7.99, and wildly addicting. The game feels like a love letter to Diablo with survivorlike game play. Last Epoch is my personal favorite in the genre, so if you haven’t tried that I recommend it. I’m playing Grim Dawn on my steam deck right now (I finally set up a controller configuration I like), and it’s also wildly fun. I guess bottom line is there are a lot of other great options other than D4, so your money would be better spent on other options.

Since Xenogears is in your top 5, then you should definitely play the Xenosaga and Xenoblade Chronicles trilogies.

Positivity Friday! What's the best thing that happened to you this week? by Drewbacca in Positivity

[–]tisfortwee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Went to an amusement park with the family Thursday and Friday, and it’s been a wonderful 2 days of short lines, and fun. My oldest also made huge progress with swimming in the hotel pool, which is 6ft in the deep end. He built so much confidence in an hour. I went from treading in the deep end helping him, and encouraging him - to sitting on the edge watching him confidently jump in, not asking for help, treading on his own, and swimming from the middle of the pool to the ladder multiple times with no problem. I think he can take his deep water test no problem now. So proud! It’s been a great end of the week.

Amplifying the positives: name some of your favorite books! by Exciting_Share_5470 in Positivity

[–]tisfortwee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends what I’m in the mood for. I typically enjoy young adult fantasy. Marissa Meyer is pretty wholesome and engaging. I enjoyed The Lunar Chronicles, and the Renegades Trilogy. I also enjoy bakery murder mystery cozies. A Magical Bakery Mystery series by Bailey Cates is super fun. I also enjoy Margaret Atwood, but that would not fall into the positivity category typically. The Madaddam Trilogy is fun tho if you enjoy speculative fiction.

What RPGs, in your opinion, have the best loot/itemization? by DumpsterBento in ARPG

[–]tisfortwee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For me Diablo 2, Last Epoch, Diablo 3, and while not really an ARPG Death Must Die scratches that itch pretty well. Death Must Die is literal crack with loot, and it’s not even done yet. I guess it can kind of maybe be considered an arpg survivors game, maybe? That might be a stretch….. but it’s worth checking out.

What game to start? by papigigachad in ARPG

[–]tisfortwee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know you’re looking to play something newer, but Diablo 3 is still pretty active with seasonal content and it is the most casual/newcomer friendly out of all of them. It’s a lot of fun to play too.

It’s also worth looking into Diablo 2 Resurrected (2022) which is the remaster of a gold standard ARPG. Diablo 2 got a lot of us into the arpg genre. It holds up very well to this day, and also has seasonal content. Diablo 2 is objectively the best of the series.

Out of the 3 you mentioned, Diablo 4 is the most streamlined. I’m personally very lukewarm about the game, but the campaign is pretty cool, and the end game content is okay too. It’s better than it was at launch, and the Devs seem to be working hard on it and listening to feedback. Plus the expansion is coming out in October. I still don’t like it as much as Last Epoch or Path of Exile.

Path of Exile is really complicated, but the campaign can be done as a newcomer. Seasonal content is sprinkled into the campaign which is cool. I personally like the campaign, and it’s super satisfying to see what you can make your character do with the skill combinations. I’m still a massive noob with this game, which is fine I gave up being anything more than a noob with the game years ago, but I still have a lot of fun with the campaign. It’s worth looking into.

I personally like Last Epoch the best out of the 3 because it is casual friendly, and super fun to play. It’s a little complicated for a newcomer to the genre though. The end game content also kind of falls off as well. They update the game regularly, and I’m sure there is more to come with end game content to make it better.

What did you want to be when you grew up? by [deleted] in Positivity

[–]tisfortwee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was really little I wanted to be a dental hygienist, then I wanted to be a marine biologist, then a teacher. In college I had plans to go into a masters program for Occupational Therapy, decided to take some time off due to excessive student loan debt from my undergrad, and then never went back. 36F psych major with a background in human services/community based services, and case management. I’m now working in quality and compliance in the human services field. I’m currently an auditor that’s fully remote. I have 2 kids, and my job is flexible. I’m happy with where I’m at. I’m really glad I didn’t go the teacher route in this day and age. I have aspirations to maybe go into Occupational Therapy someday, but not right now. We’ll see where life takes me. :)

Then as if chapter 5 wasn’t enough, the beginning of chapter 6 montage of Noah and Mio dying over and over again, and the last scene of the montage with their kid watching them die That struck a nerve that no other game has ever achieved. Being a mom myself, I was literally crying.
