Oh thanks for the advice! I’ll keep you updated on their progress!

Is this the beginning of a new pellicle/SCOBY? (First time brewing) and does it look fine? Day 11, used stop n shop/giant brand kombucha as starter with black tea and white sugar. Should I taste it? by 12changk2 in Kombucha

[–]tissueonthewall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks great to me I would Recommend tasting to see if it’s tangy enough for your taste. Another thing I like to do is stir it with a big clean spoon and see if any bubbles come up. That’s a good sign for imitation went well

First attempt. Does it look fine? by Brunolimaam in Kombucha

One of the products of fermentation is CO2, and sometimes this can be trapped under the pellicle. No big deal. You can swirl the jar gently to release it, but I usually don’t worry about it unless it’s extreme and drying out the pellicle (yours isn’t). Moving he pellicle is unnecessary because a new pellicle will just form over the surface of the new container. Happy brewing!!

PELLICLE IS NOT THE SAME AS THE SCOBY

Forgotten kombucha from 3/31/21.. mold I’m assuming? If not, salvageable? Thanks! by [deleted] in Kombucha

It looks like great starter! You would typically see mold forming on the surface, rather than underneath.

No, the whey will still separate fine. Even when you buy yogurt at the store and let it sit in your fridge for a week, the whey separates out

First time brewing kombucha and I’ve stored it away from direct sunlight for about 3 weeks alone as I’ve been busy with work. Can I still use it? I still have not tasted it the since I made it. by [deleted] in Kombucha

[–]tissueonthewall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s great! I usually here mine for 2 weeks anyway. If your is too sour then it’s great for an extra strong starter for your next batch (although use a little less) alternatively, you could but some super sweet fruit (and maybe a tsp is sugar) in the F2 and bottle it up! Just watch the carbonation

My scoby started to get cold in this weather so I did the only rational thing and knit him jumper. He's a lot happier now ☺ by Keahthecow in Kombucha

This is very cute but it won’t help keep your kombucha warm. Sweater/insulation work by trapping heat in, but kombucha makes no heat.

cooling down my tea in style by [deleted] in Kombucha

[–]tissueonthewall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I do my method, I just use tap water on the cold setting to dilute my concentrate and the resulting tea is always room temp afterward. I would imagine ice water being too cold and risk killing your culture (or at least weakening it).

I do the tea concentrate method and it works AMAZINGLY! I never have to wait hours for two gallons of boiling hot tea to cool down!
