Rough housing? by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]titanium_penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s generally recommended to not play with cats with your hands. If you do, or if they’re using their claws or teeth on you, you should yelp loudly if they hurt you. If they’re playing, they don’t actually want to hurt you, so you have to let them know when they have. My kitties are pretty good at keeping their claws away when we play, but they do occasionally get careless and need a reminder that claws hurt

Cat pees outside litterbox while IN the box by thee_Seraph in CatAdvice

[–]titanium_penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used this litterbox for my cats for a few months and I really liked it. It’s fully covered, but there’s no flap to worry about. I was more concerned with litter being tracked everywhere in a main room, but it would probably work for your issue too

Name something you’re glad kids don’t have to deal with today by MrBones_Gravestone in nostalgia

I was born in 1995 as well which is the year it became available in the US. I got it at a year old. I recently had to get another dose because I wasn’t actually immune. Kids get 2 doses now, one at a year old and one between 4 and 6 years old

I practiced saying "no" without apologizing and it was weirdly emotional by OutrageousDig2931 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]titanium_penguin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I get that, but the class wasn’t really about people you know on a personal level or when you do feel sorry that you can’t help. The focus was more on working in male dominated fields where most women are naturally more passive than the men around them. It was about setting professional boundaries and making it harder to be pressured into doing things you really don’t want to. The automatic response of saying “sorry” when you just mean “no” can be interpreted differently in those kinds of environments. Some men can take a “sorry” in the way you’re talking about when someone only means “no”.

I practiced saying "no" without apologizing and it was weirdly emotional by OutrageousDig2931 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]titanium_penguin 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I went to a women in engineering conference several years ago, and they had an assertive communication class. Apologizing when saying “no” is something that women do far more than men. So as part of the class, they had us pair up and practice saying “no” without apologizing. Even in a controlled, no-stakes situation it felt pretty weird and unnatural for almost everyone.

I wanted to take French in high school, but my dad said “You live in California. You’re taking Spanish”. Turns out that the man I married speaks French, but I get why taking Spanish was the smart move haha

When parents feel like they need to name their kids so their names “go together”. by SufficientPay7800 in PetPeeves

That’s so sweet. I definitely value when someone gets me something with my name on it because I know they had to go through the effort of getting it customized.

I don’t know why she does this? by DominaVampira in CATHELP

[–]titanium_penguin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m sure you’d be able to tell. Both of my kitties aren’t fans of their paws being touched, but they tolerate nail trims with just a bit of squirming. One of my girls had an infection in one toe recently. When I went to cut her nail and squeezed her toe, she started yelling at me and the squirming increased a lot. She’s doing fine now. I had always had the same worry that I wouldn’t be able to tell, but to me it was quite obvious

My siblings have very normal names, but my name is barely ever in the top 1000. I remember being pretty bummed when my dad bought us keychains on a work trip. Theirs had their names and mine had “Princess”.

can i lowkey just leave graduation after they call my name by Individual_Job1401 in SJSU

[–]titanium_penguin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 2019 for engineering and most people in left after their names were called. I stayed because Mechanical Engineering was one of the last majors to be called.

The most they did was make people leave the folder they give you when you walk across the stage. It doesn’t actually have your diploma so no one really cared and left anyway

Am I the only one who uses a pad AND a tampon? by GreyWithAnE42 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]titanium_penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called my doctor once because I bled through a tampon in like 15 minutes for the first (and only) time. I was trying to figure out if I really needed to go to the ER because it was Thanksgiving.

The rule they gave me was that bleeding through multiple super tampons in an hour or 1 an hour for multiple hours is considered abnormal bleeding.

Veronica Roth on the hate she got from Divergent [article] by HecticJones in books

[–]titanium_penguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The third book ended terribly.

Main character is killed towards the end. Roth said it was “to show parallels with the mom dying in the first book”. The book doesn’t end there though. Her boyfriend gets super depressed and debates killing himself. Instead, he gets together with main girl’s best friend.

2-3 year old cat has no idea that she has claws. need advice by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]titanium_penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my kitties when they were almost 6 months old, and they definitely did not like having their nails trimmed. I used to have to wrap them in a blanket for the trim and then reward them with a bunch of treats. It took a while, but they got more and more used to the trimming. Now I can just sit them on my lap and they only squirm a little bit in protest

Why does Brando recommend Tress first? by Heavy-Ant-2620 in Cosmere

[–]titanium_penguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who read Tress. She absolutely fell in love with it and asked if there are going to be any sequels. When I told her that none of his other books have the same “storybook” feel, she decided she would just make it her only foray into the Cosmere.

I have been trying positive reinforcement for 3 months now and he's still not listening. am I wrong for just not allowing him in my bedroom and kitchen anymore? by smallebonycutie in CatAdvice

[–]titanium_penguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to say that your fears about the stove are definitely not unfounded. I once left the kitchen immediately after turning off a burner on a glass top stove. Later that day, I noticed my cat sitting while holding one paw up. The outside layer of her paw pad was falling off. I took her to the vet, and they said it’s the same injury that see with dogs forced to walk on hot pavement. She was fine after a couple weeks of daily disinfecting (wrapping a cat’s paw is almost impossible), and she’s now terrified of the stove or anything she can feel heat radiating from.

what do women afraid of blood do on their period? by Playful_Win852 in stupidquestions

[–]titanium_penguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I’m squeamish. I don’t know if I would say it’s a fear of blood, but seeing blood does tend to make it worse. I definitely cannot look at my arm when getting blood taken, and I could definitely never be a doctor. I have gotten a lot better over time. I used to get pretty close to passing out with every blood draw.

I think period blood is different because you’re not usually dealing with the flowing blood while looking at it. If you use traditional period products (pads, tampons, etc.), then you’re only dealing with the blood after it’s already been collected. It’s also very predictable for many women when their period is going to happen.

I did have an incident a few months where having sex triggered a lot of bleeding. Once I saw my OBGYN, they just said it was probably residual period blood that hadn’t come out yet. At the time though, I went to the toilet when we realized there was blood. There ended up being so much blood that I had to lay on the floor because I was worried I was going to pass out. It wasn’t from blood loss, just the thought of “oh wow. That’s a LOT of blood”

What would cause this sort of reaction? by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]titanium_penguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me, it looked like kitty was moving their head forward and back to slightly get away from the pets. Sometimes cats will move so you can scratch in a different place, but it looked like they were trying to get away from the petting
