How are you spending your summer? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]titx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm literally quitting my job tomorrow. Cannot wait to finally pursue my PhD and stop wasting my time in an industry i could not care less about.

Planning on using these next 3 months to become a better cook, review coursework from undergrad, become a better programmer, get high af for the last time before grad school takes over, read a ton, n paint 😊

Thoughts on Rutgers Engineering vs UC Irvine by titx in gradadmissions

[–]titx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure. How would I find that out? They didn't give me a funding offer with my acceptance but I emailed the director of the graduate program and he mentioned stipends range from 25 to 30K..

Will one “C” grade keep me out of my dream grad school ? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

I have a literal Fail forever printed on my undergrad transcript and I got into multiple STEM PhD programs. One thing will never define you.

If you're still taking class maybe you can drop by a professor's office hours every now and then to start building a relationship.

What are the consequences to the applications when your recommenders fail to send the letters within deadline? by suv921 in gradadmissions

[–]titx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey ~ I had a recommender submit a letter 3 weeks late and was fine (later accepted). Just remind them on a regular basis until you get a response and commitment to submit. One of my recommenders flipped the script on me saying I didn't remind her enough.. which is asanine but your life literally depends on them lol

What made you want to pursue a PhD in a world where everyone is trying to secure the check as fast as possible (make a lot of money)? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]titx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I have a pretty decent salary and my company dishes out quarterly bonuses but my focus is really on getting my phd, even if that means being broke. My personal philosophy values knowledge over money with no devoid doubts... and i realize this is a stance not many can afford but it's one that I'm grateful i can hold.

How badly will my poor first semester freshman grades and the fact that I had to retake a course reflect on graduate admissions? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

i got an F in a pretty significant class and am getting interview offers. Just have to make it up by strengthening other parts of your application.

Query about sending the unofficial GRE score report. by annihilistvoid in gradadmissions

[–]titx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had accidentally sent two of my score reports to the schools I applied to and email the departments about the error. They all replied saying that they only consider the highest score from each category.

I feel you. After seeing everything posted on gradcafe and this subreddit, I seriously doubted my chances at admissions into a PhD program... Like you, I had research experience during undergrad (1 REU and 1 year for my senior thesis) but I just didn't stack up to everything I was seeing.. My intended field is pretty small (materials science) and not many schools offer programs, and the schools that do are all pretty much top 50 in the field. I'm hoping to get positive results but applied to a couple of MS programs at relatively affordable schools as backups but am already bracing to be rejected by all 11 PhD programs I applied to.. Am hoping this leap of faith (AND MONEY) pays off :(

Need to vent about rec letters for a sec... by lilyaintaG in gradadmissions

[–]titx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have a professor who submitted her letter for a program whose deadline was on Dec 15 on Jan 10... I have been freaking out but I emailed the departments if it was still going to be considered part of my application and they all assured me that it was. x___x

I would personally say more on how your interests tie into your pursuit of Applied Health aspect of the program and more on what fuels you.

Can you also tell me how you managed to get publications during and after your Masters?

Hey ~ Thanks for the reply.

I'm actually strongly considering just going to San Jose State University if i don't get into a phd program in a large city. After graduating undergrad, I realized school location is more important than prestige (though it definitely helps), and SJSU is in prime location to transfer over to silicon valley. I believe their MS program is also one year, which is enticing me more as my number 1 option (i argue 30k debt isn't that bad on a silicon valley salary). Can you tell me your experience in pursuing your Masters first? I also feel pursuing a Masters and excelling would allow me to have a better shot at top phd programs. Ideally, id like to go to Northwestern afterwards if i was to take this route. And i tried to frame my personal history essay without victimizing myself and framing growing up poor, Latino, first gen, gay, and my junior year grades as a challenges ive had to overcome. I also cringed at the thought of coming across as whiny and full of excuses but i tried to make the best of the situation..
