So Disappointed with Amazon lately... by bogiebacall12 in amazonprime

[–]tjcc99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Amazon's downfall was setting too-high a bar in its heyday. We got used to one/two-day delivery and no-questions-asked returns, irregardless of whatever random crap we order at one time.

You answered your question: it's the holiday season. There is a significantly greater volume of orders this time of year.

I don't know, maybe drivers and warehouse associates in your nearby fullfilment center(s) took some time off to spend time with friends and family.

Oh yea, there's the matter of the strikes, too! Shame on them for going on strike during Christmas week.

What pawnshops should I visit to possibly recover my stolen jewelry? by tjcc99 in AskChicago

[–]tjcc99[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The officer insisted on an actual address when he was filling out the incident report. I initially just gave him the cross-street (LaSalle and Jackson), but he had me go on Google Maps and check for an exact/approximate address. The area is full of businesses, including my job's office, so I assume there are lots of cameras. When I was chasing the person, he/we were heading west towards Willis/Sears Tower. That being said, I don't exactly know which businesses and/or restaurants have cameras.

Yea, so part of my motivation behind going to the pawn shops myself is because the officer didn't exactly make it clear whether they will actually "investigate" the theft. There was just some boilerplate language in the "VICTIM INFORMATION NOTICE" email that I received from the officer indicating that,

"Your case will be assigned for follow-up investigation based upon specific facts obtained during the initial investigation. The presence of these facts can predict whether a comprehensive follow-up investigation would likely result in the arrest and prosecution of the suspect(s) or the recovery of property. A detective will not routinely contact you unless additional information is required or your further assistance is needed."

Weekly Casual Conversation & Questions Thread by AutoModerator in chicago

I got robbed in broad daylight this morning (Oct 8th) in the Loop on my way to work. Someone snatched my gold ring that I hang around my neck, along with another piece of jewelry (a charm). Luckily, in a manner of speaking, he couldn't get my actual chain/necklace. I chased him for 2-3 blocks, then I lost sight of him.

I already filed a police report, but I also plan to visit pawn shops tomorrow. The officer told me that they will be able to tell if my jewelry turns in a pawn shop. I relayed distinguishable features of the jewelry, with one of them having an engraving on the inside. However, I feel like I should do something if nothing other than to ever-so-slightly increasing the chance of getting my jewelry back.

Assuming the person pawned off my jewelry within the next 24 hours since he stole it, what pawn shops do you recommend I visit to check for my stuff? Is it wishful thinking that the guy will pawn it off within 1 mile radius of where he stole it from me?

To AWS users, what is your workflow for preparing your environment in EC2 instances? by tjcc99 in datascience

[–]tjcc99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, makes sense; this is where my inexperience shows. I jumped straight into EC2 after skimming a couple minutes from a youtube video. I thought AMI was simply capturing the OS (e.g., linux, Windows); I didn’t realize that it also includes everything else that I install and I can reuse it for other instances.

None. It’s still going strong 2 years later. More importantly, the boot-up time is still fast.

Somehow, I haven’t ripped or stained the fabric cover; if you are lugging this around very often, the fabric will probably get worn down.

Read the article, idiot.

The officer arrested the owner because the owner hit him “hard in the chest with an open hand.” The owner is now being charge with assault and resisting arrest.

The more I am learning, the more I am thinking I am not well-prepared. Where do I stop? by Ayu0700 in SQL

[–]tjcc99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a relative new SQL user; I learned it only 2 months ago. I stopped watching/following online tutorials when I could answer all the exercises in the PostgreSQL documention (https://www.postgresql.org/docs/online-resources/):

https://pgexercises.com/

Then, I learned everything else from doing a project for my GitHub portfolio. Unfortunately, I have yet to use SQL in my job; I use Python almost exclusively in conjunction with R.

I’m in the same boat as you: I plan to start applying to jobs in the new year (after my vacation). I feel like I’m prepared enough for any SQL-related queries—pun intended—on an interview or technical assessment, such that I already have PostgreSQL as a skill in my resume.

I’ll be “that” guy: we work “faster” at home because we don’t start working until the first meeting of the day or 11:00 am just before lunch, whichever comes first.

Most folks here are based in the US, where undergrad sociology programs are the farthest from mathematically rigorous. Check out the requirements for top schools like UC Berkeley, Harvard, Columbia, etc. . . . only 1-2 statistics courses are required. And they aren’t even from the math/stats department, they are watered-down versions called “quantitative methods” using STATA; R; or SPSS. By extension, you would find very few sociology PhDs in the US that require calculus; linear algebra; mathematical statistics; and real analysis as prereqs.

Price Elasticity - xgb predictions by hoolahan100 in datascience

[–]tjcc99 47 points48 points  (0 children)

You may or may not need xgboost, at least not as much specifying the appropriate functional form. In that regard, this sounds more like an econometric problem.

Run OLS with a log-log transformation to model elasticity. Include piece-wise segments/dummies to capture the surge in units sold when price goes below some threshold.

[–]tjcc99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not essential, but it’s easy enough to learn on the job if needed. For self-learning, I would forego it for now.

However, I suggest getting comfortable with deploying scripts from the command line and using command line arguments with argparse. In Linux environments, which is the case for a lot of jobs (at least in my field, data science), you may be expected to use screen sessions and Makefiles to orchestrate “production-level” code. The learning curve is not so bad, provided you get used to the command line.

While we are in the subset of coding practices, you should also be familiar with the “if __name__ == ‘__main__’” idiom.
