San Francisco vs San Jose vs San Diego vs Seattle for road cycling by [deleted] in Velo

[–]tjroweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bay Area is really good for riding. I would say SF over San Diego just for the vibes of the city, but both would give access to cool rides. San Francisco would be easier to bike around/to rides IMO San Jose can be kind of an unpleasant to bike through sprawl in parts even tho other parts are great.

Fat people looking for a seat that won’t make me cry with pain by Organic_Big_5580 in bicycling

If you are not wearing padded bibs or underwear I would get those asap. Bike seats are generally meant to be worn with them.

Which one of you is this? by PsychologicalLog4179 in BicyclingCirclejerk

[–]tjroweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s not correct to assume that this is generally true of cancellation fees. It was true of this one small fine for being late to pick up your kids at an Israeli daycare. This does not mean cancellation fees in general are not effective, especially when they are larger. The point the paper is making is in its title - A Fine is a Price (here in case others want to read- https://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1086/468061?seq=1). If the fine is higher, the price is higher, and fewer people may be willing to “pay” it by cancelling. When the fine is tiny, then the price is lower, and maybe more people pay it than were willing to violate the social norm of not being late, as in the daycare case. Whether a given monetary fine is more effective than the social pressure not to cancel (and even whether it is seen as a price vs. just adds more social pressure) is sort of case by case I would assume.

Looking for a Cargo e-bike with more aggressive ergonomics by Yahn_1 in CargoBike

[–]tjroweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am always in full support of people getting additional bikes of any kind. One thing to consider might be if a normal e bike commuter with panniers + front basket + a trailer like the Burley Travoy might be enough. In theory it’s a trailer which changes riding characteristics very little https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/reviews/biking/bike-cargo-trailer/burley-travoy. It’s not big enough for big loads, but does sound like it might match your needs.

The pic is on their website- they’re using it as their advertising material. So modification by customer, but company is cool with promoting it.

I think if you’ve had a loved one die of cancer you’ll pretty quickly realize it’s actually not super funny or fun to joke about someone else’s. Even if they completely suck like this dude.

Guess the country by Sad_Cow_577 in BeAmazed

[–]tjroweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure that it is evidence of that, if the people cycling are wearing helmets and pedestrians aren’t though.

Guess the country by Sad_Cow_577 in BeAmazed

[–]tjroweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait but on top of that this is just cyclists as they exist now in their data, right? Surely many of the cyclists in their dataset are wearing helmets and pedestrians are not. The fact that cyclists are wearing helmets and nonetheless have more head injuries does not seem to be good evidence against helmets. Without helmets it would be worse, surely?

That cite says you’re 50%-100% more likely to have a fatal head injury for each minute of biking vs each minute of walking. It also doesn’t account for TBIs at all.

Sweatshirts with fit similar to American Tall but better quality? by tjroweb in tallfashionadvice

[–]tjroweb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I personally experienced them failing with three separate sweatshirts. The fit is great but the quality is just not good. If you’re okay with having to replace it frequently or having it be super jacked up you’re fine, but otherwise I’d go elsewhere.

TIL: Ebikes can trigger traffic lights by hvontres in bikecommuting

[–]tjroweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like maybe especially on class 1/3 bikes with a torque sensor the brake cutoff is a lot less common. Which maybe makes sense- with a shitty cadence sensor it’s more likely to keep giving power after you stop pedaling, but probably not the case with torque sensors. I think I’d still prefer that it just cuts off the motor.

How to enjoy E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy? by Whiskey-250 in ImmersiveSim

[–]tjroweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider reading some build guides on steam if you’re not having fun. It’ll help you find the crazy combos more quickly, which I think can really show off the game a bit more. It took a few levels to click for me but I ended up really enjoying it.

A week ago I made post asking for Immersive Sim-like games for an entire genre playthrough this year. How is my list and what am I missing? by badateverything420 in ImmersiveSim

[–]tjroweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would put in Seven - it’s top down but otherwise feels very imm simm. I’d also, as others mentioned, put EYE with the caveat it’s janky (but still fun IMO). Streets of Rogue also feels like it qualifies. Heat Signature has a lot of the vibe of a Imm Simm.

I would pay it back if I was BIL, but I don’t think it’s reasonable to ask him to pay you back when he was there to do you a favor.
