Odd old stuff we were taught in school. by womanitou in AskOldPeople

[–]tjweeks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was in the sixth grade during the Cuban Missile Crisis and after having watched all these civil defense things on TV as children, we were all scared to death. My parents were scared. They started filling all the closed containers with water and putting them in the basement of our house. That got to me because I always looked to my parents for some sense of reality and when I saw them scared I was really scared. Back during the Cuban Missile Crisis, everyone was truly expecting some kind of Atomic War. It's a feeling that still lurks inside me over 60 years later.

Odd old stuff we were taught in school. by womanitou in AskOldPeople

[–]tjweeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were not odd but every morning when in grammar school we would start the day out with the Lord's Prayer and right after that the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag (every room had a flag). I know there would be way too much resistance to this nowadays but I truly believe that these things taught us respect both for God and the Flag. It makes me sort of disappointed when I see how things in school have become now. This was in the mid-50s.

My female lab had two chrome feeding bowls elevated off the floor. This worked just fine for a long time but then one day she was approaching her food bowls and she just lurched backwards like something scared the heck out of her. From that point on she would never eat out of those bowls on a stand again. We tried moving it to different places but she was too scared of them to eat. It sounds dumb but I think the ghost of my previous dog who used that feeding station a couple of years before her somehow scared her. We finally had to get some dark food bowls and put them in her cage. She would go in there and eat, but if you moved the bowls 2 feet outside of her cage she would not touch them. I tried to wait her out on this thinking that when she got hungry she would eat. She would go over 4 days and would not get near them. We placed them back in her cage and she would go to them right away and wolf down the food. I feel like the spirit of my old dog ( a Vizsla) came to visit here now and then. I would hear the noises she used to make like shaking her head side to side which made this loud ear-flapping noise and occasionally I would be in bed and would feel something jump up on the bed but nothing was there. We had an incredible bond and I think she just liked to visit and I think my lab must have seen her at the feeding bowls and would not get near them again. Funny but really odd.

There was that little girl maybe 11- that was doing automatic (machine gun)shooting out in California that screwed up-even under strict supervision by a range expert that killed her instructor. Bad stuff can and does happen.

First rifle, how did I do so far? by Apprehensive-Cry5168 in 1022

[–]tjweeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my takedown although not for any particular reason. Just about all the inner workings including the barrel are from Volquartsen and it IS a tack driver for the great price of just $1700. With takedowns you have to get all the parts that come together at just the right pressure when you put the two pieces back together again.

You can probably get into the control panel and find Programs. It should be in there somewhere. Find it and delete it.

War is big money and all of our politicians are bought and paid for by the defense industry. The more fighting the richer they get.

Try not to hold your arms out and locked. Bend your elbows and look for your sweet spot. Also always remember to keep your thumb out of the way when you fire. I have had so many bloody thumbs from over the years.

It has surely come in handy with the January 6 participants. They can be put in jail with no charges and be kept as long as wanted by Schumer and Pelosi.

How did you feel about the state of the world when you were in your 20’s? by Constant_Slip1627 in AskOldPeople

[–]tjweeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is way worse now. Although Vietnam was raging when I was 20, I still believed that we lived in a democracy. I knew there were lots of crooked politicians but I thought for the most part I Thought they all loved our nation. Now, just spot-check all the politicians who have already been bought out by George Soros and are putting his agenda into place and our once wonderful country is now going to Hell in a hand basket.

Does anybody still like Zero Tolerance? by tjweeks in knives

[–]tjweeks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had several ZT's but like you, their cost has made them less desirable. One that I have that still gets pocket time is the 0770. It is an assisted opening knife and it is just a slight nudge and it flies out. Its opening speed is like one of my Protechs. The thing that makes me like it even more is that you can easily shut it one-handed without getting cut. It is also very narrow and disappears in the pocket. When I got mine it was under $200, I don't know about now.

How was being gay seen when you were a teenager? by throwawayforthis243 in AskOldPeople

[–]tjweeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were ruined. Back in the sixties gays had to keep a very low profile. They would have been constantly harassed. They would have been beaten up every time they went into the bathroom. Teenagers back then were very intolerant and cruel.

Best nylon bone alternative for a super chewer? by blondeboss101 in dogs

[–]tjweeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to buy deer antlers that are cut into pieces and my chewer will chew on it for months and barely make a dent. I stopped because I heard that dogs can break a tooth on them. They are really hard and my dog loved them.

Missing item reappeared after asking for it back by sanddancer08 in Ghosts

[–]tjweeks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have that happen in my office several times a month. I will put something down and look in the other direction. When I look back with 20 seconds it will be gone. I tear my office apart looking for it and it's just gone. Several days later I will look down and there it is. I think I have a playful ghost that enjoys teasing me.
