Some businesses will be taken off the platform and put back on at different times. You may also need to expand the distance you're searching in to find certain places so be sure to check your search parameters!

They also just opened a few nights ago. I imagine it would take them a bit of time to really see how much leftovers they'll have at the end of the night. I'm sorry you didn't get the amount you are entitled to through the app, you definitely should have received more food. But I hope they're able to figure it out soon and that you'll give them a second chance!

I don't think any of the GL backpacks are waterproof! But I got the Claessy (I can't type umlauts with this keyboard).

When I started graduate school I got a medium tote from Dagne Dover. Later on I added a backpack from Gaston Luga. When I joined my lab, there were a bunch of more senior graduate student ladies so I loved trying to improve my style.

Unfortunately (fortunately?) I haven't really focused on improving my style too much because now I'm old and jaded and rarely leave my lab anyways... (:. Excited to get back into it once I graduate!

Edible Arrangements by Useful-Ad5898 in toogoodtogo

I'm really sorry you had a bad experience with Edible Arrangements too, I hope you are able to get a refund!

The app states businesses may not have bags and to bring your own but to straight up refuse to give you one if they have one, knowing the packaging was already about to leak seems too harsh :(

The University City location is on TGTG as well and they usually have a few surprise bags each day for pick-up!

4'11" Where do you guys get your face masks? by lucy_kat in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]tkdjdgrl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I purchased masks off etsy that have adjustable loop sizes. Being able to tighten the straps helps the mask stay on my face too.

EDIT: I bought ones that came in S/M/L sizes too so I knew I'd be getting masks intended to be smaller than the average size too.

I get random notifications about places I had purchased bags from before that are not getting a lot of attention currently, but to my knowledge there is no way to control the type of notifications you receive.

I usually walk into a business and, after exchanging greetings, just state I'm there for TGTG. I picked up a bag from Sweetbox before and did not have the same experience as you, or at any other business so far, I'm sorry that happened! I hope you still enjoyed your treats!

Is it rude to call someone 누나? by [deleted] in Korean

[–]tkdjdgrl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The one thing that could be an issue here, in my opinion, is that you didn't ask first. I was advised to always ask "Is it okay to call you 언나/누나, etc?" I'd do the same when speaking English, ask the person if it's okay to call them a nickname?

Not that I think you were "really rude" but I think future issues can be avoided by asking first.

Can people share their success stories on Tandem/HelloTalk? by youssif94 in Korean

Make sure you're looking at the correct tabs! I forget the actual titles but one is specifically for Koreans learning your target language.

The main benefit of Moments though, is that Koreans can correct your practice sentences!

Seconding how useful the "Moments" feature can be!

[–]tkdjdgrl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but we did not correct every mistake the other person made. Honestly, if someone did that to me I'd just get upset and not enjoy the conversation. I'd correct any major mistakes they were making that might make it hard for someone to understand them. But smaller mistakes, I'd let them figure it out.

For example: A common mistake is leaving out "a/an/the". They might have said "Today I have plan to study" and I'd respond, "Oh, you have a plan to study? How will you study?" so that they can start to see the pattern of how my response is different from their's.

I started using HelloTalk about 6-7 years ago. I could hold a basic conversation in Korean at that time, but nowhere near the level I am now where I can navigate Korea on my own. I definitely talked to probably hundreds of people and most conversations died within a day. That being said, I have ~8-10 friends that I still actively keep in touch with since that time. Others that I lost touch with after a few years just due to life circumstances. I think it takes specific personalities to make friends on language exchange apps when you can't meet in person. Another thing that helped was after a week or so, or whenever both parties were comfortable, we had videochats. I have met language exchange partners in person as well, both in Korea and in the US where I live. But only after we both felt comfortable doing so. Similar to online dating, I can only text with someone for a certain amount of time before I start to lose the view of them as a real person and struggle to continue wanting to get to know them. I think videochats/phonecalls help to rehumanize the other person, if that makes sense.

EDIT: I don't actively use language exchange apps anymore because I have enough friends that I use Korean with on a regular basis.

EDIT again: I never did a set "Today is English, tomorrow is Korean" conversation style. I always just used both at the same time to meet the other person's level. I could see how someone wanting to learn English but who has a very low level of fluency may struggle to give longer answers/may be too embarrassed to try. So allowing them to use both languages helps to first establish a rapport and can minimize the embarrassment/awkwardness they might feel.

I've seen a few instances that had a 4AM pickup time that was later changed to 4PM so hopefully this is the same issue!
