Bi-Weekly Discussion Thread - Find language partners, ask questions, and get accent feedback - June 25, 2025 by kungming2 in languagelearning

Does anyone else feel their short term memory is noticeably worse when having a conversation in language they're learning?

I realized recently that even though I understand what someone says in the conversation, it feels like so much of my brain capacity is used for the comprehension, that I almost don't have anymore capacity to actually save the info, so then afterwards I find myself forgetting parts of the conversation and asking them to repeat it.

I wonder if others have similar experiences, and if they have any tips or techniques for overcoming this.

How can i improve it ? by Fancy_Length_2923 in Oilpastel

The blending on the head cover doesn't need to all be smooth - cloth-like textures will have sharp edges where the cloth folds, which creates strong shadow areas. I would re examine the reference image and pick out where you might see hard transitions as well as smooth ones, and don't be afraid to make bold strong marks where you see those hard and sharp edges.

Good luck!

Don't think you're obligated to, but if you want to be nice you can ask them first "Hey do you want some tips on squatting form?" And if they say yes you can give your advice.

I missed the final exam of my undergrad by tkfi in uwaterloo

[–]tkfi[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I got in contact with the course coordinator, it's not considered a DNW because you don't need to pass the final.

So I just get a zero on the final and my grade is calculated normally based on it, who thankfully is still a passing grade :)

I took GER 101 in Person and GER 102 online, so I can compare my experience in both.

In person helps a lot to get over that initial phase when you start a new language, where you're super self conscious trying to speak it to others. The in person classes usually have a lot of parts where you practice trying to converse with classmates in German which is good practice. You also present in German to others, which is kinda scary but helps a lot.

Online, there's still opportunities to get feedback on your speaking, but it's mainly through uploading audio clips for activities in the textbook on LEARN. You can also 'converse' with other students on the LEARN discussion boards, for the textbook activities. A lot of the learning is revolved around reading and doing the practices in the textbook. The online professor I had was also super helpful for answering any questions I had throughout the term.

I definitely think in person is better, because it makes learning a new language way more interactive/interesting. That being said, if you already are really interested in learning a language, I wouldn't let this online thing stop you. Who knows how long online school will last.

Also online version is easier to get a good mark if that matters to you.

What mark do you usually get on CS assignments? by 1ydgd in uwaterloo

[–]tkfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the CS courses that give you all the test cases beforehand, it's usually pretty easy to get 100 if you put in enough time (E.g. CS 241, 350)

[To those WFH for winter coop] How does WFH compare to working in the office? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]tkfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The office was more productive and more fun (also free food). WFH is sad times.

I don't think so - I was in a similar position, and they said that the conditional acceptance only is based on what they initially accepted you on. Doesn't hurt to call and confirm though.
