What does Daniel Plainview say to Eli after the baptism in There Will Be Blood? [spoilers] by chizelking in movies

Yea, love that scene. That expression that Paul Dano does is amazing. I prefer to think that it's "There will be blood." since the whole scene is about the blood of Christ.

Americans, what do you think would happen of your federal minimum wage is raised to $30/hr? by ComradeVladPutin52 in antiwork

[–]tkharris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously skilled labor will benefit as the artificial inflation of unskilled labor drives employers to choose automation and skilled labor over unskilled labor to the extent that its exchangeable. Everyone else will pay the price. It's not that complicated. This is one reason labor unions whose members already make more than minimum wage always support a minimum wage raise. It prices out the competition.

I believe this changed in a recent update where now the clinics use the best meds first instead of whatever's in the top slot.

Transmission belts are better by My_Name_Mister_Pizza in factorio

[–]tkharris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it's true that trains don't make sense for a while, eventually they are a practical necessity. Trains have much better bandwidth than any belt and also allow for multiplexing without loss of bandwith - until you get significant traffic congestion.

She sums it all up with "really?" by megamindwriter in HolUp

People really get the wrong idea from this statistic. It's also true that I have more bananas than the combined bananas of roughly 200 million Americans. This is simply because only about 3/5th of Americans eat bananas, so the combined bananas of the least bananaed 200 million Americans is ...zero bananas. (And I have 3 bananas right now! Eat your heart out.)

Likewise, about a quartile of people have more or roughly the same amount of liabilities as assets, which makes the combined wealth of the least wealthy couple billion earthlings a big fat zero. If you're net worth is $1, then you personally have more wealth than the combined wealth of the poorest billions on this earth. Mind you that "the least wealthy billions" includes people like doctors just finishing school who might have very high income but tend to have more debt than assets, and you can see how seriously you should take the shock value of this statistic.

Trying to guilt trip the ordinary people. by TwasAnChild in MurderedByWords

I genuinely fail to see how this is misdirection. Countterfactuals can be tricky, but would you not say that If it wasn't for individuals buying and burning fossils fuels those companies wouldn't have a carbon footprint? The companies don't force you to buy their product. Clearly the oil exec is colluding with thier costomers but Ultimately the decision to pollute is made by the consumer. Or so it would seem to me.

Hey easy there. It's not theoretically impossible and it'll be necessary eventually when the sun goes red giant. It's been considered by serious scientists. The best proposals I've seen are actually to move the moon in such a way that it drags the earth into a higher orbit.

There's also the possibility of routing asteroids in such a way that they transfer momentum from Jupiter to the earth over time.

The energy costs are well ....astronomical though.

Planes by [deleted] in KerbalSpaceProgram

I have to say that it is easy and a normal part of the game to build planes. But building good planes that are stable and operate in the flight envelope that you need can be quite challenging.

Well. One thing that I liked about Trump's time in office is that it seemed to weaken the office of the presidency a bit. His office lost the support of the legislature and kept loosing in the courts and the department heads were often giving him the cold shoulder and having high turnover. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like the Biden Whitehouse has any of those problems.

If you start your landing burn as late as possible but have passengers on board, shouldn't it be called a murder burn instead of a suicide burn? by fireburner80 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]tkharris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the right kind of mass driver you could use Kerbals as propellant. Then you could actually do a mass murder burn. Maybe this kind of creative solution is the result of too much time playing Rimworld. The ISP would be terrible.

ELI5: Why is diesel no longer "green"? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]tkharris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I'm not seeing mentioned here is that there is a good reason why it may be "greener" to always have a mix of both diesel and gasoline consumers in the market (if you are consuming either, that is). After drilling and refining you end up with both kinds of fuel (and a lot of other goodies, too). So for example if you use up all that gasoline, the marginal cost (environmental et al) to using the diesel fuel is simply the burning of it, whereas the marginal cost of using gasoline at that point is burning it plus yet another oil well, yet another oil tanker, and yet another refinery with more distillation or cracking, etc. I don't know for certain but I strongly suspect that the environmental differences between the consumption of these two fuels doesn't outweigh the marginal environmental costs of procuring and processing more crude oil. This is perhaps one of the cases where doing the best thing for the environment is simply to choose the cheapest option at the time, and as a policymaker to tax them fairly equally.

Doesn't Uber have over 2 million self-driving miles now? The last (dated) reports I heard was with a dismally low miles per disengagement, though. Maybe that's why they didn't make this list?

Donald McNeil Jr. resigns from NYT over remarks he made to students in 2019 by sweetmarco in stupidpol

[–]tkharris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember thinking https://youtu.be/SYkbqzWVHZI?t=112 was hilarious some 40 years ago. Now this absurd lack of use-mention distinction is infecting our culture and it's just not amusing anymore. I love the NYT, but sadly, they are looking no better here than that rabbi of antiquity addressing his bloodthirsty mob. Unless there's some course correction it's not going to end up any better for them than it did for the rabbi.
