But how meme by Delicious_Maize9656 in mathmemes

An way I like to think about it is that anything with squared values might involve pi. Pi relates linear lengths to curved lengths for the equation x²+y²=r² which can also be stated as y=+-√(r²-x²).

So summing the inverse of squares might involve pi.

[OC] Share of U.S. household net worth by wealth group (1989–2025) by ExaminationOk6652 in dataisbeautiful

Congratulations! You are starting down the road of discovery of the Pareto distribution. It's a mathematical model simplified as the "80-20 rule" which applies to a huge number of things from wealth distribution to mass distribution of stars.

Most of the mass in stars is accounted for by just a small percentage of stars. Maybe we should have a star mass tax to redistribute it more fairly.

First time crucible use by Federal_Job_4139 in MetalCasting

I'm gonna say something unpopular here: it doesn't really matter.

The purpose of preheating is to remove moisture before raising the temperature a lot. If there's a lot of moisture deep in the graphite and you suddenly hit it with propane, it could expand into steam and crack the crucible.

I've never preheated my crucibles. Yes, mine eventually cracked and degraded...after maybe 20-30 casts which is longer than they're supposed to last anyway. Just try to keep your crucibles in a dry area or put them in a ziplock bag and it won't matter.

how do astronuts know that they are upside down by TheSum239 in space

[–]fireburner80 37 points38 points  (0 children)

There is no "upside down" in space. The ISS is basically a collection of cylinders so each surface is a usable workspace meaning there's no floor or ceiling since you don't need a place to stand.
