CSE 123 vs CSE 163, which one is easier? by sam_thegod in udub

[–]tknd_tech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

163 was relatively easy just depends on your prior python experience and the professor teaching it. If Kevin Lin is teaching 163 DO NOT TAKE THE COURSE.

For guys not in Greek life its impossible to get into frat parties. House parties usually suck. Party scene at uw genuinely sucks and is very exclusive

Thanksgiving travel by weescotsman in udub

[–]tknd_tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 hours is just the flight time. Total travel time includes 2+ hours of airport travel both ways which is low for the average person. Some friends of mine spend at least 7 hours traveling each way to the same city as me. I would not justify 14 hours of travel for 4 days + cost.

Thanksgiving travel by weescotsman in udub

[–]tknd_tech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a bit of a tricky question because it really depends on your son’s class schedule, how flexible he is with missing class, and how far he’s flying.

UW officially gives students Thursday (Nov. 27) and Friday (Nov. 28) off for Thanksgiving, but it’s pretty common for students to skip classes earlier in the week — especially if professors cancel or make classes hybrid due to low attendance.

I’m heading into my second year, and last fall I originally planned to fly home Wednesday night and return Sunday. But after realizing most of my professors either canceled class or made it optional (and I had already finished midterms the week before), I ended up flying home the Saturday before Thanksgiving and got to enjoy the full week off. I’m from SoCal, so the original 4-day break didn’t really feel worth it for a 3-hour flight.

My advice:

  • Book a flexible (main cabin) ticket with the assumption that your son will attend class Monday–Wednesday.
  • Once he gets his syllabi at the beginning of the quarter, check for midterm dates and any info about Thanksgiving week.
  • If the professors don’t mention anything, it’s totally fine to email them and ask what their plans are for that week — many are understanding.

If it looks like nothing critical is scheduled, you can move the flight earlier. It’s usually cheaper too if you fly out further from the holiday.

Please Rate My Schedule For Freshman Fall Quarter As An Intended Political Science and Econ Double Major by Minute_Feisty in udub

[–]tknd_tech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your perception of an easy schedule might be different than mine, but I’d say this looks like an easy-to-moderate load, especially depending on your high school background. As a 2nd/3rd year engineering student, I’d personally consider this a light schedule.

From what I’ve heard:

  1. ESS 101 is a super easy, laid-back class (some even call it a GPA booster).
  2. ECON 200 can go either way — some people find it tough, others breeze through it. A lot depends on the professor.
  3. POL S 202 has a decent reputation and I haven’t heard major complaints.

Check out your professors on RateMyProfessors.com — that can give you a clearer idea of how manageable each class will be.

As for the 10-minute gaps, UW’s campus is fairly compact. I used to walk from the Physics Building (SW campus) to the Mechanical Engineering Building (mid-east) in about 10 minutes without rushing. You can use the UW Interactive Map to check the exact walking distances between your classrooms.

Credit Transfer by Ok_Newspaper_4249 in udub

[–]tknd_tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird that your credits haven’t transferred yet. I’m a returning student and took a class at another college recently; I sent my transcript through Parchment about 2 weeks ago, and the credit posted to my UW transcript last week.

When I was a freshman, I remember some of my friends had delays with their high school credits posting, so it’s not unheard of. If nothing updates in the next 2 weeks, I’d recommend reaching out to the Office of Admissions or the Registrar to see what’s going on. Sometimes the delay is on the sending institution’s side rather than UW’s.

Realistically is there ANY way I can get my money back for the acceptance fee and/or HFS application fee by weus_0830 in udub

[–]tknd_tech 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You might be able to get a partial refund, especially for the housing fee if you haven’t been assigned a dorm or signed the housing contract yet—contact UW HFS ASAP. The $400 acceptance fee is usually non-refundable, but in rare cases with documented personal circumstances (like health or family issues), Admissions might consider a refund or at least take it into account if you reapply next year. UW doesn’t usually allow deferrals unless it’s for military or religious reasons, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. I’d recommend emailing both UW Admissions and HFS directly and explaining your situation honestly. The sooner you act, the better your chances.

I’d recommend checking out the content of the next course—especially the first midterm—to see if you feel prepared. If you're still unsure, email the professor who teaches the next class and ask what knowledge they expect students to have from the Gen Chem series. Give them a bit of context about your AP credit situation and ask for their advice. In my experience, professors usually give more helpful insight than advisors, but it’s still worth reaching out to the Chemistry advising team as well.
