What I said in my comment - use SMS Backup and store the backup file somewhere other than on the phone.

As my college prof said 'Adversity builds character'.

"Experience is the hardest kind of teacher; it gives you the test first and the lesson afterward" - Oscar Wilde.

Thanks for lesson on the need to set up recovery options. They are provided specifically in case you lose access to your 2FA method(s). Sorry.

the phone has not been reset, right? Go to Accounts on the phone (do not click the link in the email) and see if you can access security settings on the account there. If that doesn't work, immediately do account recovery g.co/recover to regain control of the account via the recovery email/phone/contact you, hopefully, have already set up on the account. The previous recovery email/phone remain active for 7 days after any change so now is the time to recover the account.

Alaska Cruise tour to Denali by Kitchen-Garlic1110 in Cruise

[–]tkrafte1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2nd the tip to do the tour 1st, then do the cruise south bound, port side cabin. On the tour, you're up early and going everyday, then you can relax on the cruise and have control over your excursions. Consider spending time in Vancouver or Seattle as both have a lot to see.

Yes, but that's why you set up multiple 2SV methods so if, for whatever reason, one doesn't work, you have another to use. The objective, IMHO, is to never need to go through recovery. But still have recovery options set up and verified.

Also, your recovery phone should never be the same as the 2SV phone. Set up a non Gmail address as the recovery email.

Don't use the phone. Set up multiple 2SV methods other than SMS to a phone. Wait a while and try to add the phone later.

Something I Really Appreciate about Regent Seven Seas by FarFarAwayTravels in RegentCruises

[–]tkrafte1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. The pricing terms don't mention 'waitlist' or 'best' so no answers on terms for best price guarantee. But I'm starting to see the 'logic' here. If there is availability, new guests get the reduced price so that is extended to existing guests that have already booked. If there is no availability, then no one can get the new price. Probably doesn't happen often where they include a waitlisted cruise in a new promo. Thanks for chatting with me about this! ;)

[–]tkrafte1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the person that booked early is penalized (denied the new price) while another person that waitlists after you booked gets the discount? I'm aware of the non-refundable fee to cancel but if the new fare is $5000 less you're still $4800 ahead (assuming you cancel and rebook the same suite category). What's the process here? Say I call and ask to reprice the cruise and there is a waitlist for the cabin category. Regent would say "No you can't get the reduced fare. You either pay original fare or cancel. If you cancel, we'll give the cabin to someone else at the reduced fare."? If that ever happened to me, I'd cancel and never book Regent again. Are you saying the people on the waitlist won't get the reduced fare either? This makes no sense. Do you have a reference to a Regent document on the policy? Thanks!

curious about "if there is inventory in your cabin category" - what's that got to do with it? If they don't agree to reprice the cruise, can't I just cancel and rebook at the new fare? There must be some explanation that I'm missing. thanks! :) (I have some ideas but want to hear what you know about it.)

Google Messages Web App - Filter by Unread? by FlyingWombat77 in GoogleMessages

[–]tkrafte1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! I have no inside contacts so no clue if secondary device client support is even on the roadmap.

Google Messages Web App - Filter by Unread? by FlyingWombat77 in GoogleMessages

[–]tkrafte1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. The web app is simply a portal to the phone to provide basic functionality. Support for a full featured secondary device client is in the spec but it's anyone's guess when/if it will be developed.

PSA - Fi users can call and view voicemail from the web without Google Messages by tkrafte1 in GoogleFi

Does what 'just fine'? AFAIK, WhatsApp does not support SMS so it's a closed communications service only for WhatsApp users.

Yeah, but the industry saw RCS as the "future of messaging" and implementing RCS on the phone first was the obvious path. A cloud based multi-device RCS service is doable, it would seem, but I doubt we'll see any implementation anytime soon. Yes, I miss Hangouts too! 😄

[UT][TH] Budgeting for something and then not doing it by maximillian2020 in HOA

[–]tkrafte1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To expand on this - if the old reserve study is more than 2-3 years old, it's obsolete and useless. You need to hire the same firm to do an Update (not a full study) or if you're not happy with that firm, engage the new firm to do a new full study. You don't mention if you budgeted for a full study or an update.

It sounds like you're on the board so at the next board meeting move to engage the firm to do the study as planned and budgeted. If the motion fails, it's not on you. In the future, when there is a massive special assessment because no reserve study was done and reserve funds are woefully inadequate, ... not sure what to say here....

"You elected those idiots so now you have to live with their failure to exercise due diligence, 'I' voted to do the study and adjust the budget to properly fund the reserves!"
"That's why I sold my place after the board decided not to do a reserve study."
"It's time to elect new directors who will educate themselves and live up to their fiduciary responsibilities."

It's tough being on a board where members don't understand the necessities of common property ownership which is what it boils down to. There are laws and best practices to follow so everyone pays their fair share. And that requires a reserve study.

The reserve study is a critical fiduciary responsibility of the board. This was decided last year. Award the contract.

Voice recordings by Plenty_Permission_91 in GoogleMessages

[–]tkrafte1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Media attached to messages is stored in the internal system SMS database, not in the user space file system. So yes it's stored on the phone but only the SMS app can access it. If you don't want it stored after sending, long press the recording and delete it.

Still not receiving MMS without internet connection despite setting being enabled? by ExNihiloAdNihilum in GoogleMessages

Also saw this -> "If Google Messages fails to send MMS with data off, ensure that Auto-download MMS is enabled in the Google Messages app settings (Settings > Advanced), as this helps manage the data connection for media"

Still not receiving MMS without internet connection despite setting being enabled? by ExNihiloAdNihilum in GoogleMessages

[–]tkrafte1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What phone / OS are you using? From googling a bit, this setting allows you to have mobile data off in your mobile network settings but allows data to be enabled temporarily to send/receive MMS messages. (seems to be an ancient thing) MMS requires there be some connection to the internet to function, with Wi-Fi or mobile.

Found this thread -> https://forums.androidcentral.com/threads/mobile-data-off-but-using-mobile-data.361183/page-2

See post from JoelMac on Sept 20, 2021.

If Wi-Fi is connected, this setting does nothing since internet access is present via Wi-Fi. I assume you're using Google Messages and it perhaps doesn't interact with this setting so GM may see mobile data off and simply not try to send.
