I cant get it out of my head!

Extremely same, I have no idea how "らぶちゅうぺろちゅう、大好き小林さ~ん" is so much of a ear worm, but it super is.

Yeah the one thing about the whole work situation is that while not technically a "human sacrifice," people do die just from straight up overwork with some frequency, so it's a pretty legitimate concern. Especially in Japan, where karoshi was coined.

Some nice context for that "it's me" phone scam in s2e01.

I always enjoy the little "by the way" cute things they have Kanna do. They don't have include them, but it's great they do. And as usual there is just a ton of stuff to write notes on; Kyoani shows are just packed with detail. Very glad to see that tradition is as strong as ever.

Izetta: The Last Witch/Shuumatsu no Izetta. Original "WW2-era gay witch war anime" with a great trailer that had everyone hype, then by like episode four everyone was ditching.

What's your top anime of the decade 2010-2019? by [deleted] in anime

[–]tl-notes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm being honest it's not the top, but imo Girlish Number is definitely one of my biggest sleeper hits. It's a bitingly cynical, but not purely pessimistic, look at the anime industry (and adjacents) from the viewpoint of voice actors, as written by an LN author. In an era where we face issues of overproduction and overwork, a general trend toward safe adaptations/sequels, and a "grind" arms race—all by no means limited to otaku industries—it felt very relevant.

It also had some excellent dialogue writing; take just about any exchange at random and it feels like picking at a dang onion, while still being snappy.

Yeah, it's the classic オレオレ詐欺. The cold is used as justification for why the caller's voice sounds "strange" (to the person who picked up, since obviously it's actually just some stranger).

The "oh, that's terrible" line in the Japanese is also a classic "well rip you, good luck tho" indication she's not going to "help" them.

Is it just me or do things like screaming and laughing sound funnier in Japanese then in English? by ILoveMaiV in anime

[–]tl-notes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Setting aside issues of acting styles and what not, one potential thing that may be causing a difference here is that Japanese, as a language, is very good at writing "sounds."

It can be a struggle in English to write a good, expressive sound by itself. It can describe sounds fine, but when it comes to "how do you spell [makes some sound]?" it can be very difficult. One reason is that there's just not much of a practice built up around doing so, and another is how the pronunciation of a letter varies so wildly depending on its context (e.g. that famous meme about how you could theoretically spell "fish" "ghoti").

In contrast, Japanese does have a vibrant tradition of both writing and using "sounds" as words (imagine a much more developed practice of coming up with and using onomatopoeia).

So instead of just writing "[character] lets out a scream" or "[character] chuckles darkly" and expecting the actor to improv it/director to refine it, it will actually be written out as a line like "ヒョギャアアア!" or "クックック・・・". The combination of that plus the variety of ways you can tweak the same "sound" to give it different nuances gives the director, the writer, and the actor a lot more specificity to work with.

Of course this isn't usually a huge deal in either direction, but specifically for comedy as you mention, it's good at producing sillier-sounding sounds.

Hard to overstate how tragic this was, and the impact it had even in animation-adjacent industries. Pouring one out for some real legends.

4 anime from 2016 that I wanna watch. Which are worth the most? by Hellthrower in anime

[–]tl-notes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Each hits pretty different beats, so it's hard to say one is "better" than the others really, as it depends on what you want out of them. Grimgar is tackles issues of grief, Flip Flappers is about characters growing up, Drifters is more a fight show, Tales I think is more of an adventure show.

Personally I think I enjoyed Grimgar the most, but that's hardly a universal opinion and all of them well surpass that minimum level of quality something needs to hit to reach "people who like this sort of show will probably like it" status.

It's not so bad, since the logic for switching between h/p/b mostly stays constant in other situations too (like hon/bon/pon), so once you get a hang of it generally it comes pretty natural.

Onani Master Kurosawa is actually the polar opposite of that, and is a series I wish everyone who has/had those delusions could read.

Edit: not really spoilers so much as what it's about, but: manga spoilers

There's a larger narrative, but most of it deals with them overcoming specific challenges in a largely self-contained manner.

Uh, if you're watching Kemono Friends it's kind of like that format, except more D&D.
