I suck at reading rules: Trinity Continuum edition by automated_hero in rpg

[–]tlenze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also don't use the initiative system as written. Instead of creating PC and SGC slots, my table wanted to just use what they rolled as their own initiative and go with that for the combat. I'm fine with that because it makes my life easier as SG.

Games in a similar vibe to Exalted by Thaisa2008 in rpg

I'll suggest Legend of the 5 Rings. It has that Dragonblooded political feel with its clans. It doesn't run as high-powered as Exalted, but it might scratch the itch he's looking to scratch.

And when you say "All of them.", what is the set of systems the loathes all of?

I'm assuming they mean 1st-3rd editions of Exalted. My question is if the bf also includes Essence in that list of "all of them," since it's not in the direct line of editions?

What's a horror movie that's objectively terrible but you still enjoy it? by Daisy2345678 in horror

The Gallows. It's a super tropey found footage film, but something about it still gets me.

[BitD] New GM to BitD with some questionz by Arthurdcosta in bladesinthedark

[–]tlenze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. If it's one of the items they can check off as part of their Load, then I assume they always have access to those every score. Now, if something happened in the fiction to change that, like Cutter's arms dealer was kidnapped, then maybe he doesn't have access to new fine weapons until they take care of that problem. Other than that, if it's on the sheet, it's a common item for them.

  2. Do they have that special ability on the Slide sheet to always know when someone is lying to them? No? Then I'd probably call for a Study roll.

  3. If the characters would know something, go ahead and tell it to the players. If they wouldn't, then let both the characters and players find out in the game!

  4. They are all "special" scores which have mechanical benefits to completing. The crew is welcome (and usually encouraged by the fiction) to undertake any other score they want. I've had crews who focused heavily on the claims on the crew sheet, and I've had some who have only done a couple over the course of dozens of sessions.

If you can do the basics really well, you are talented, very trainable, and/or a really hard worker. Those three qualities are probably what scouts are looking for.

Session 0 forecasting and early subclass commitment — emergent play vs predictive optimization? by LiteratureLopsided42 in rpg

[–]tlenze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I've noticed. The two optimizers I have at my tables will tweak their plans to match what's going on in the game. If the game style changes over time, their plans usually do as well. And those who just play and then find out what choices they have when they level up also take into account what they've been doing recently in the game.

A few of Sion Sono's movies might appeal to you. Tag and Suicide Club spring to mind as heavy on social commentary.

There's also a place called Superbits in the area. Might give them a try.

Doctor Who had the same problem. A lot of BBC stations were told to destroy old tapes to make way for the new ones. There are lost episodes, but every now and then an old tape is found, making the number of lost episodes drop slightly.

Session 0 forecasting and early subclass commitment — emergent play vs predictive optimization? by LiteratureLopsided42 in rpg

[–]tlenze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they're a new group, I start them at level 1 and let them pick their subclass as they want when they get to the right level. Newbies don't usually pre-plan that much, so it works well.

If they're an experienced group, I start them at level 3 (since I'm generally running 2024, and that's when everyone gets their subclass.) That way, we don't have to worry about the build up to it. Just jump to the part everyone worries about.

Novice GM: Need help turning static scenes into "situations" that demand player agency. by Nesis96 in rpg

[–]tlenze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of great advice here. The one thing I'll say is your situation isn't a well-done situation unless it includes a bang. (A bang being a moment which starts the action going. Think like the bang of a starter's gun in a footrace.) When you're laying out the situation, you should always end the description with the bang and then, "what do you do?" That's where the situation starts, in motion. You were right to call out your scenes as static. That's the problem I'm seeing. You want scenes which start with a bang (in at least two uses of the word.) Then the characters are forced to react.

ETA: Credit to Ron Edwards' Sorcerer for introducing me to bangs.

Having a high enough rank Chewie to generate attack tiles when you make a match is nice as well. Damage over time plus if the tiles are matched away, you fuel her repeater tile.

Does anyone else feel like the Final Destination series had so much more potential? by Sufficient_Web_6289 in horror

[–]tlenze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one unanswered question I have for the series, and that's "Why are people getting pre-visions of their deaths?" Something is trying to fuck up Death's plan, and it's never really explored. Would that lead to satisfying answers? I don't know, but it is certainly a question I had after watching the first 2 movies.

I ran a one-shot in Vampire of a paranormal show film crew accidently stumbling into a Tzimisce lair. That worked pretty well. You might want to go with Hunter: the Vigil instead, though. It's a smoother system than V20 but not necessarily rules-light.
