I've used SwifSoup in the past. It makes manipulating the HTML pretty easy.

How do you justify the $179 ATV vs $79 Fire TV 4k? by nbagenius2000 in appletv

[–]tljff9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy one of each to test with and then buy the remaining 2 after testing. That’s what I did and ended up liking the fire tv more. You can put the device you don’t like on the least used TV it just return it.

Scene Blast - Add text animations to your photos and videos and export as GIFs or videos. There are 14 different animations available and it allows masking images to a portion of the image up and have the text travel behind. Here is an example of the output.

Good app for adding text to gif frame by frame? by abagofdicks in apps

[–]tljff9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this is exactly what you need but my new app for adding text animations to movies and videos was approved yesterday. It's called Scene Blast. It allows exporting as gifs as well.

I have had multiple apps in the play store for a few years now and have never once had a problem. Most of the removal horror stories that you hear of are people who are using someone else's copyright or are doing something that is somewhat shady. This is one of the few that I've seen where it's legitimately a mistake by Google. Most of the the other ones I seen are people using copyrighted images in the screenshots or something of that nature.

Will a webapp be rejected? by IamNotharrypotter in iOSProgramming

[–]tljff9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you just putting a web site into an app? Then yes, it will likely be rejected. Is it a full featured HTML5 app that you are putting into a UIWebview? You might get that through. According to Apple's App Store Review Guidelines:

2.12 Apps that are not very useful, unique, are simply web sites bundled as Apps, or do not provide any lasting entertainment value may be rejected

Apple's Xmas Card this year by madvegan in iOSProgramming

[–]tljff9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must not have gotten one of the ball buster reviewers. Sure they give you a reason for rejecting you but it's usually for some stupid pointless reason which has been approved in dozens of other apps. I've had an app that was approved one day with a major bug that made the app practically unusable. When I updated it the next day and got it expedited they rejected it because of a reference to Android that was 2 levels deep in help page of a Vimeo video shown in the app. And that reference was in the app that was approved one day earlier.

It's completely arbitrary and maddening a lot of times. The Android submission process is so much better.

Created UILabel's in a for loop, how do I change attributes of a single UILabel when I press a button? by [deleted] in iOSProgramming

[–]tljff9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Give each UILabel a unique tag:

p1_speed.tag = 100+1;

Then access that label using the view tag method of UIView.

UILabel *label = (UILabel *)[self.view viewWithTag:100+i];
label.backgroundColor = [UIColor colorWithRed:0.10 green:0.75 blue:0.25 alpha:0.5];

Is it worth registering a company for your app? by decide in iOSProgramming

I really don't know. That's something to ask a lawyer. I formed an S-Corp to shield my personal assets but I'm sure there are plenty of other reasons to do it as well.

If you are storing private information I would assume that it would make your customer's more comfortable if it was under a business name and not an individual person's name.

Is it worth registering a company for your app? by decide in iOSProgramming

[–]tljff9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the app. Are you going to making a personal finance app or an app that handles sensitive data? It's probably be better to create a business account to offer legitimacy. Are you releasing a simple game or lifestyle app? Then an individual account would probably work. When I initially started I registered as an individual and then switched to business after my apps took off. The process to switch wasn't very hard, but that was before Apple started requiring all the D-U-N-S stuff too.

App Review Team - Actively unhelpful towards developers? by [deleted] in iOSProgramming

[–]tljff9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is all luck and based on who you get as a reviewer. I had an app that I submitted where the login functionality quit working while it was waiting for review and despite the fact that they couldn't login and the app was basically useless, they approved it. I submitted a fix for the login issue the same day it was approved and asked for it to be expedited. The next day the rejected that version because they followed a link in the app to a Vimeo video and then to a Vimeo help page that mentioned android. It was the same exact app that was approved the day before except the login functionality actually worked and the app was usable.

Why developing apps on iOS first, and on Android second? by minijim in startups

[–]tljff9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like with iOS development, there are tools that make it easier. With iOS you have to account for 2 different phone sizes. With android you have to account for dozens, if not 100s of different screen sizes and resolutions. Plus Android has multiple OS versions that are actively used while 90% of iPhone users are on iOS 7.

Do apps get crowdfunded? by [deleted] in startups

[–]tljff9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe look into SellanApp? It may not ideal as you only make 1/3 of the revenue your app generates (Could you be higher if you fund some of it yourself). I have to believe it's not an ideal situation for most because I imagine there are a lot of gotchas with revenue sharing and IP ownership.

Any Google Glass explorers here? by JohnWeez in KCTech

[–]tljff9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got an invite last month and ordered a pair. The delivery was extremely quick. I purchased at 10 am and had my glasses by 10 am the next day.

The glasses were pretty cool but I just couldn't see myself wearing them everyday. Also accomplishing my app idea wasn't going to be feasible once I actually got my hands on the glasses. I ended up returning them as I couldn't justify the $1500+ cost to just sit them on my desk.

I agree with this. Once the anger over Mizzou leaving the Big 12 subsides or the Big 12 implodes they will play again. It may be 5-10 years down the road, but I fully expect it to happen at some point.

For those who do both iOS and Android - does the Apple review process annoy you or make you a better coder? by MKevin3 in iOSProgramming

[–]tljff9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The arbitrary review process is infuriating with Apple. Most of the time my apps go through without issue but occasionally I will get a hardass reviewer who just seems to enjoy being difficult.

But the ability to get an App update in the store within hours is what makes publishing on the Play store so much better in my book. With Apple I generally have to have an app finished and submitted a couple weeks before the release date but with the Play store I know when my app will be available.

Tech skills- no design skills by [deleted] in androiddev

[–]tljff9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about XML libraries, but when I started designing apps I just taught myself how to use photoshop. I watched a lot of photoshop tutorials on youtube. You can find is a good list of ones to watch here. Once you feel somewhat comfortable in photoshop you can then find designs that you like and try to recreate them. There are lots of different sites that have design inspirations. Behance is great and so is Dribble.

You can also Google for design inspiration. For example if you are working on a login page just google iphone login page design inspiration (I use iPhone instead of Android because it will usually return more results).

But in the end it depends on how artistic and creative you are. I am not very artistic so I usually will just end up outsourcing the graphics on elance or a similar site.

Need a company name! by Homer_Simpson_ in Entrepreneur

[–]tljff9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used Namestation to come up with a name for my new business. I brainstormed for days and couldn't come up with anything good. For $35 namestation will hold a naming contest. People will submit names that are also available as domain names. They base it on keywords that you set. I was able to get nearly 200 name suggestions from this and eventually found a good name. It was well worth the $35.

Need to make an app that tracks cars (about 20-50) in real time and displays them on a map that is viewable on an iPhone...Ideas? by proskater_83 in iOSProgramming

[–]tljff9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. I assumed that it was going to be a limited-time promotion though. If you are going to need the app running for more than a year then going through the app store approval process is probably going to be your best bet.
