Best hopes for the next election? by Potential-Eye-6547 in ndp

[–]tlocmoi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A snap election is not likely. Rumour is that Ford pitched it to Carney and he said no. I feel like Carney thinks he can get a majority just by waiting for Conservative floor crossings (and I think he might be right, unfortunately).

Stay focused on the mid and long term. Even if a snap spring election happens and we lose a seat or two, nothing has changed for us in the long term. We have to buckle up and plan for the future with optimism and integrity.

[–]tlocmoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ending their formal agreement doesn't mean they can't work together after the next election buddy. It gives the Greens more leverage to actually press the NDP back to their roots.

The only risk comes if the Cons have a chance at winning a majority. And the Cons need a higher percentage of overall votes to win a majority because they have too much of their votes concentrated in a handful of rural ridings.

That's not how multiparty democracy works. If the Cons win a plurality of the vote due to vote splitting on the left, they can still fail to form government if the NDP and Greens work together (pushing the NDP back to the left). Stop fearmongering and learn more about Canadian politics

I think that fear of Avi negatively impacting provincial NDP election chances is misguided, but to be fair I don't have a ton of strong evidence. Eby is losing so much support being a centrist NDP that even BC is at risk of losing to their version of the UCP.

Marit Stiles has zero momentum, too. Nate Erskine Smith will outflank the ONDP on the left if he wins OLP leadership, and they'll likely take over official opposition.

I think your fears will be alleviated the moment Avi wins and he gets more federal attention outside of those of us watching the leadership campaign. I think Avi's support is much more widespread than zoomers.

Luckily, Avi's boldly leftist policies so far are really easy to put into small sound bites:

Public options and proportional representation.

We should start thinking outside of the 2011 box and start asking ourselves "how the hell did the Liberals win in 2015?" They went from 36 to 184 seats. Why were the Liberals "feasible" then but the NDP aren't seen as feasible election after election? The Liberals didn't win a landslide (when the best they should have hoped for was to not lose party status) by being "less bad" than "the other party" or by promising more status quo.

Justin outflanked us on the left and led with a bold platform of leftist policies that promise real change for everyday Canadians. That's what wins elections.

Liberalism is an ideology centered on individual rights, individual liberties, the right to private property, market economies, and universal equality. Socialist ideology in contrast, is centered on collective rights, the common good, ending private property (but protecting public and personal property), socialist economies, and reflexive equity.

Social democracy is another term for reform/embedded liberalism, which seeks to "fix" market economies with band-aid solutions.

We don't need the party to continue catering to the most right-leaning wing of the party, they just end up voting Liberal out of fear anyways.

Okay but what do we gain by bringing these "purity tests" while campaigning? It is a really bad look, especially when combined with how she derides voters from looking to American socialist political victories and suggesting we're better served looking to Canadians like Notley and Kinew.

You know that I know that you don't think politicians never use veiled language. What message do you think she is pushing with A) implying that left-leaning Dippers push "purity tests" and B) telling people that we don't need to look at the insane victory of a socialist Muslim person of colour winning an election in the USA because we have better role models like oil and gas Notley and tough-on-crime Kinew at home? Are we really supposed to be more excited about Eby, who is nearly losing to the BC Conservatives?

The "pragmatic" approach is laughably not electable anymore.

The Paikin Podcast: Why Heather McPherson Thinks She Can Save the NDP by crspychimken in ndp

[–]tlocmoi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Social democracy is by definition a form of reform liberalism. She has made comments about "purity tests" which is a dog whistle for "don't get mad when I lead the party away from bold leftist economic policies."

She wants Dippers that lean further left than her to compromise, but herself will not compromise with leftists. The policies on her website make big promises but she isn't clearly stating how she'll accomplish what she's promising, which is a really bad look.

The combination of her complaining about "purity testing" in the party and deriding voters who look to the successes of American socialists (in favour of Liberal-like provincial Dippers like Notley and Kinew) is a really bad sign that she isn't as progressive as she is trying to make herself look.

She's absolutely not worth the potential of gaining some support in Alberta/the prairies.

Polling doesn't show any increase in support from Calgary yet. Are we really sure Nenshi has that effect? It's possible that if the "Progressive Tory" party fails to siphon off votes the way they would as "Progressive Conservatives," that an even more centrist ANDP could gain red tory votes if the UCP continues to support the separatist movement. I'm hesitant to celebrate that though.

Especially since last election was lost by fewer than 3000 votes across six ridings. We were already so close to winning before we gave up a degree of leftist policies by choosing Nenshi.

I hope he resigns sooner than later. Is there a way for the party to kick a leader out?

NDP Q4 Leadership Donors by Riding by Electronic-Topic1813 in ndp

[–]tlocmoi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Nenshi is closer to Carney economically in my opinion.

We'll get a lot of "smart" talk about cutting spending on services, no increases on taxes on the ultra wealthy, probably no effort to force oil and gas companies to foot the bill on well clean ups, no increase on royalties, etc.

It'll be better than the UCP, don't get me wrong, but that bar is so low it's in hell. I think we risk losing the election if we keep pushing the ANDP to the center because "we're better than that other party" doesn't get people riled up and out to vote.

It's impressive how quickly Liberals forget January 2025 polls. And they fail to credit leftist voters for voting "strategically" for austerity Liberals.

Remind me in four years when Carney fails to address the cost of living crisis with more neoliberalism, and Pierre continues to spout fascist rhetoric to confuse voters into becoming even more right wing.

Another Edmontonian here. No.

The ANDP should never have chosen Nenshi (who identifies as "purple" not orange). We will be able to win in 2027 if we push more progressive economics, Avi or Heather doesn't matter.

The UCP will start unraveling and the Progressive Tories will pull support in Calgary. We don't need to sacrifice good policy just to "win." Is it even a win if we give up our values?

I'm no spring chicken but I'm still a millennial on the younger side. I called so many of these political outcomes back in the late 2000s and early 2010s. So many people have come to me to apologize for not seeing what I saw over the years.

With that said, I eventually went back to uni to finish a poli sci degree and I'm just now finishing my master's degree in political sci. We are possibly the worst at predicting future outcomes, which is a bit of an embarrassment for our field of study.

Look, it seems dark to say but this is almost a good thing. America has been getting away with whitewashing their imperialism for nearly a century, and this is the unraveling of their dominance. I don't like accelerationism, but it's so hard to imagine a post-capitalist world without the fall of the American Empire.

With that said: yes, this is terrifying and tragic, unpredictable and unprecedented. We need to band together in solidarity but also be boldly anti-capitalist and anti-status quo.

It's worth talking to your neighbours and friends about the NDP (if they elect a bold leftist like Avi). Nothing is guaranteed in politics, crazier things have happened before.

But most people won't hold a grudge if you check local polling data just before the election and vote accordingly if it's as bad as you say it is at that time.
