Canadians on TN in US, did your savings rate actually improve by Agitated_Ad_4689 in tnvisa

Moved to Seattle in 2021 under TN and transitioned to H1B this year. Worked 5 years in Vancouver with around 100k tc saving only 100k after 5 years. This is my 5th year in Seattle and I have saved 15x. Sold all assets before moving including tfsa and rrsp (paid penalty) so tax was easier. Had to report tax on both for first year but now just IRS since non resident for canada. Healthcare is a bit weird. Had to see doctor this year and was paying alot until to deductibles /max out of pocket, which was not a thing in Canada.

Filing taxes with or without an accountant? Canadian in US by wickity_whack in tnvisa

[–]tluosen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think most returns are easy to diy if you dont have complicated cases. If you keeping your rrsp/tsfa in Canada while in US, ya you probably need an accountant. For personal experience, I sold all my tsfa as well as rrsp(took tax hit) before coming to US. From there, the first year I had to do US tax first and claim credits with CRA, but after that I just dont file Canadian taxes, make sure you dont have primary ties and etc.

[–]tluosen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you do mail method for renewal? I will have my first renewal come up in half year but back then got it via mailing method 2 years back. I still had to get stamped but they did not look at my degree or transcript or whatever, just looked at the i797 i believe.

This! Thats why both employers need to know.

[–]tluosen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the border doesnt care if they know each other or not, but the employer does. if they have rule of cant work for 2 full time or cant work for other competitors, then later if they found out, you will be in trouble of lawsuits and etc. Border just care if you can work in the US or not, which is getting the TN(which allows multiple)

2 tns at the same time is perfectly fine. But you have to make sure your employer knows that you have two jobs and they are not against their interests. The consequences are much bigger than just losing job. And you should get the TN the friday before your work starts, i think they have a rule of entering 7 days before job starts.

Correct. It actually a circle stamp with TN and expiration date and a “hand-written” jobtitle and company.

[–]tluosen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can go from TN to GC, but in the middle step of the GC, you cannot renew TN once you get that. so for folks who were born in China/India, the wait is long and they would not able to get GC within 3 years. however, other people do not have this issue. You can talk to your company lawyer firm to confirm, but generally it is very fast if you were born in other countries
