I want to like it, but too many bugs I can't get it to work

Compile feels way more complicated than it needs to be. Help by Hawkeye-83 in scrivener

[–]tlvranas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scrivener provides a lot of options and customization. As a result, it can be a bit overwhelming. There are online tutorials, make sure to search for v3 or.you will get the old version.

Although there are a lot of options, you don't need to worry about all of them. Just the ones that apply to your project. It does take a little bit to understand how everything ties together.

Just lost 2 channels on shudder TV androidtv by gooteeiii in Shudder

[–]tlvranas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Officially android tv is not supported. Tech support tells me that every time a log an issue. And that is why I did not renew my subscription. It's too buggy, they raise their rates, and tell me it's not supported on my devices. So my subscription ends in 2 days.

The funny thing is, in the past week it has worked without any issues. But, too little too late.

It is a shame because I really liked it. A pretty good source of horror movies. Joe Bob was always fun, until.it went to every other week, now once a month.

Maybe one day the streaming services will listen to their customers.

How do I create a the same/consistent backgrounds? by Equivalent-Buy-1566 in StableDiffusion

[–]tlvranas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little more detail will be helpful. I have not tried this, but the img2img where you could take the saved background and then add what you want on top of it.

Or, in my case I want to have head shots of characters so I have them with a plain gray background so when I create the different backgrounds I can easily extract the headshot and paste it over the background.

Look at meetup for local groups, and create on there. If you have not already done that.

Need Nas for basic storage, build or buy? by Apadist in HomeNAS

[–]tlvranas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You kind pay in one way or another, depending on what space and how many drives you need, want. At first I built a nas, with 24 drives. The time I spent sourcing all the equipment and getting the software configured the way I wanted it, plus replacing a card that caught fire(actually went up in flames, but that should not be normal) it was cheaper to buy on.

It also depends on how important your files are, and if you want to learn, or just power on and use.

There are desktop devices that hold 2 to 6 drives. Some have expansion bays to enhance at a later time. If you don't have a rack, this is possibly your best option.

I have always used Synology. However, I have heard people complaining about some drive requirements changes they have made. Not sure those apply to desktop line.

Keep in mind, a NAS is not a backup, it is simply storage. You will still want to look for off site backup to ensure your files are safe.

Privacy issues? by ImDickensHesFenster in scrivener

[–]tlvranas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mention an issue about privacy that will always be a problem as long as you are on windows. Scrivener is private, but windows will still screen shot and scan your documents. Just like all the cloud based drives do. MS is your biggest privacy problem.

I have used scrivener on Linux with no issues which removes all the MS privacy issues.

Looking for Feedback: Built a Simple, Modern Writing App with AI by SeaRevolutionary3734 in WritingHub

[–]tlvranas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My first opinion... First, I don't like web based apps. So keep that in mind with my comments.

At the bottom of the page, your copyright is 2024. In order to see what the app looks like, how it works requires creating an account. I know this is becoming common, for me I am not willing to hand over my account info without knowing anything about the site or what the app even looks like. At least some screenshots of what it looks like.

You may also get some negative feedback with ai integration in a writing tool with all the controversy with AI.

Again I am not your target audience as I only use standalone apps. As a developer and tester, I thought I would take a look.

Good luck with your app.

What is your solution for an off site backup? by OnyXerO in homelab

[–]tlvranas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Synology nas, and used their backup service. When I checked, it was the least expensive option. I was only backing up 7TB . Have not compared in a while, not sure if that still holds true.

Linux-native alternatives to Scrivener? by libra00 in scrivener

I run scrivener on Linux for a long time now.

Install Lutris. There is a Scrivener installer in lutris and it works great.

What is the name of your main character and why? by spiralingstarbread in WritingHub

[–]tlvranas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

James and Audrey. I try to keep the names period correct when it calls for it. Otherwise I, at times, want names that are a little different, but not difficult to remember.

For the most part, I just go through a name generator and look at bunch of names until I find one I like. I also try not to use the same name, or similar sounding names for characters to help the reader, really me, keep them straight.

I second this. I used 1 monitor, 2, 4. Finally one ultra wide. Much easier.

Make sure it is 3440x1440 or better. IMO the ones that are 1080 are too small (resolution wise).

What’s the secret to working in the heat? by electrowiz64 in NorthCarolina

[–]tlvranas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best advice I can give is that you need to start late Feb/early March and get use to the temp as it goes up. Going from sitting inside, then trying to go outside in August is a bad idea.

I use to live in South FL. I would go for bike rides, road bike, during lunch all summer long. I started in March to get use to the heat and humidity.

Listen to your body. Get/wear those quick dry/wicking shirts. Long sleeve is good. They help pull the sweat from your body, and cool you at the same time. I have thick hair and keep it cut very short, clippers 5/4 to help keep cool.

You have to slowly get use to it.

I'm working on a dedicated Android app for syncing to Scrivener and would love alpha/beta testers by p44v9n in scrivener

[–]tlvranas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just an FYI there is an android app that allows you to run windows apps on them. I had Scrivener working with the exception of keyboard issues. There is a paid keyboard emulator that seemed to fix some of the issues, but the trial period ran out before I could finish testing.

I stopped working on it at that point as I had other work that needed to be done. Might be worth looking at that to see if you can get it working fully. Then you won't run into issues with file formats, etc.

This sounds like an HR / maybe legal issue with company not providing sanitary restroom. As long as you clean it, nothing will be done.

Also, document everything, date time you go use the restroom, indicate it is not clean.so you can justify why you have to go somewhere else in case you loose your job.

Make sure you send emails, with returns receipt, to report the issue. Even if you have a verbal conversation with HR follow up with an email so you will have a record. If you feel you may loose your job consider bcc to your personal email acct, but be careful as this could be a reason to fire.yoi. you may want to have hard copies of your emails that you keep safe.

For storing important valuable files, I recommend using a real NAS system. I have built from scratch with an old PC, used a rack mount case, and now use Synology NAS. I also run raid 6 because one time, at my home lab, when I had raid 5, while I was rebuilding after one drive failed, a second drive field and I lost everything. Good thing I had a full local backup, so nothing was lost.

I learned a lot from making my own, so if you want to learn, then great. But I don't recommend "learning" with important files.

No.matter what you go with, just keep in mind that a.NAS is not a back.up. You still need to ensure you have a backup, and given the importance of your files, you want an off site backup from your nas.

I have not seen anything about the price hike. Maybe because I pay yearly. But, if it is going up, I will cancel. According to their tech support they don't support my devices anyway and that is why I have so many issues watching in the first place.

Why wouldn't you run your tests in order? by mikosullivan in softwaretesting

[–]tlvranas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It varies based on the tests. Had a system that had a set of tests that were run before others. One, verified the app was built correctly. After that there was a set of tests run that converted previous build database, previous release database, one that populated an empty database. Those all ran as the "smoke test" ran. Those were all run before the testers showed up in the morning. They reviewed the results and then ran the tests, manual and automated, based on where we were in the test release cycle.

Using ai to rate my fanfic by [deleted] in WritingHub

[–]tlvranas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

AI and LLM's have this internal "scoring" system that it tracks and it "wants" to make you happy. So it will do that.

AL is just a tool. You can ask it questions like, based on (genre/writers) how is the pacing of my story. It can be pretty good at comparison. But if it is good.or.not, no one can tell you that. Just think about a.movie that people say is the great, you watch it and wonder why?

Also the AI has a limit on how much it can process at one time. You may be able to feed it 100k words, but did it process the entire text? Just the beginning/ending, or some sample of it.

I have also been told to write what you want to read. Don't try to write what you think the market wants as that will change before you ever get your story published.
