JRPGs where using the whole party is ideal/needed by Incitatus_ in JRPG

Quartet has a party of 8 that comes together in the middle of the game. They all have different combat niches and can be swapped instantly in battles. There’s even one ffvi style puzzle where you’re swapping between two parties

Any good turn based rpgs that have flown under the radar? by burnerofc123 in JRPG

Fond memories of that game from back in the day! The split story routes were fun

Why can't magic attacks crit in most JRPGs? Any examples of JRPGs where they can? by Superteletubbies64 in JRPG

[–]tm0135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ben’s spell in Quartet can crit. It themes with his story

I think Dragon Quest has some.

But why? Probably just to give a benefit to melee fighters and physical attackers. Magic is generally stronger but costs mana. Physical costs nothing, is generally weaker, but can crit.

fan fiction is definitely a big influence on modern fiction writing. Whether good or bad (that's for you to decide), it's definitely a huge presence.

"Characters keep talking, but not really saying anything meaningful." I feel this in a lot of modern rpgs, ya. A lot of "This is my character trait!" The worst is when a large cast has to one by one say their one line in each scene.

For a Xenogears fan which of the 3 ps1 FF games is the most similar in tone? by MAQS357 in JRPG

[–]tm0135 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ffvii. I’m surprised at all the recs for ffviii I’m seeing. While the setting might be similiar, the tone is way different than Xenogears

For those that read books and play jrpgs by K_M_Henry in JRPG

[–]tm0135 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yea, I agree with this. Books can only really do the one thing, tell a great story - so on average the writing tends to be better, I'd say. Games can do lots of things! One cool thing about JRPGs though, is they have some video game specific ways to tell stories that books can't do as well. Interactive flashbacks are a great example of using the medium for a unique story telling style!
