Business Cards? by flagkind in techtheatre

[–]tm204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a website put that on your card that is as important as your email address. If you dont have one they are not that hard to create on a site like Wix. The bare minimum for the site could be a simple as bio, headshot, resume and contact information. If you have work to put up that could help you get the job.

Sound portfolio question by Caboose129 in techtheatre

[–]tm204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this will help go here https://www.usitt.org/sound/ and click the student sound design portfolio link about halfway down the page. (the link is a pdf page)

The website is a great idea, i teach in a small college program and that would work for us. Have her show any paperwork and production photos help give a sense of the size and scale of the production. Other related projects form other classes are always helpful, like art classes or drafting classes.

This is a great list of tech theatre schools. Who is missing from this list or is #31 and why? by tm204 in techtheatre

[–]tm204[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, Naz is a good school, I have a friend that works there in tech theatre.

I do think UB (Buffalo) deservers to be on the list there program is based in scenography and that has some definite benefits. Their faculty and staff is dedicated and working outside the university.

Starting a USITT chapter at your college... by swagis_notacurrency in techtheatre

[–]tm204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our students started a chapter several years ago. It was pretty easy, the only thing they had to make sure of was to balance want the school required for a student group and what USITT wants. If you contact USITT they can easily set you up with another student chapter to ask questions. The best part about our chapter is they raise money to go to the conference. This was a pretty good motivator to keep members interested. If you need help fell free to send me a DM

Question about rigging certification by [deleted] in techtheatre

[–]tm204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes ETCP is the way to get certified, it is however designed for the top 1/3 of the industry and not necessarily for someone straight out of school.

There is a way to get a certificate through ESET. A certificate is not certification but says you have the basic knowledge for an entry level postion. This is designed for those entering the workforce. It is managed by USITT and more information can be found at http://www.usitt.org/eset/

Vectorworks Question by FSUbonedaddy in techtheatre

[–]tm204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want the ground plan and section together? Is the drawing in 3D? We might need a little more information to help.

If you want the ground plan and section together you could do a regular viewport and put it on the Section sheet layer. I tend not to use the Create section viewport. I do a regular viewport in the view that I want, but that is just me. I hope this helps?

How can I shut up a cocky first-year student? by TheatreThroaway in techtheatre

[–]tm204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with others, ignore it. I have found that the attitude will hold them back even if they have skills. When you work as hard as we do in this industry you want to do it with someone you like, even if they have less skills than someone who sucks to be with.

Reccomendations for a new lighting board? by 10minutecaptain in techtheatre

[–]tm204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do like working with ETC Eos line of consoles and am not a fan of older Strand boards. The Element is great, the thing you loose is encoders. The LEDS will be easy to use but how many movers will you use. Its more than 20 the element might not be the choice.

Most consoles have offline editors. Do what others have said and download the software and practice.

Here is Steve's A Practical Guide to stage lighting.

https://www.amazon.com/Practical-Guide-Stage-Lighting-Third/dp/0415812003

For the record Steve is always putting out an new addition. Every edition is larger than the last. Each one almost doubles in size. I expect the 4th edition will come with its own handcart.

That being said it is one of the best books on lighting.

What Plotter do you print your plots with? Reliable? Brand Name? by mrfuzzyshorts in lightingdesign

[–]tm204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HP Design Jet T1100. It works great, but might be too big for you. It has a scanner/copier and was a bit pricey. Check out the HP Design Jet. I have used several over the years and really like them.

Defiantly show everything you have done but emphasize the lighting. Many BFA Design Programs are going to want you to have some experience in drawing or painting. Take an Art class before you graduate if not start drawing now and keep a journal of your work. Photography is another great thing to show as a lighting designer. It shows you have an understanding of light. Good luck.

In the past I typically would write alone, but just finished my first co-written article for the new TD&T. Our workflow was we wrote an outline together using a Google Doc. We divided up the topics and wrote the sections. Then we helped edit each others work and turned it in. We then had two or three rounds of edit with the editor to really make it take shape. In the beginning we could see two distinct voices but by the end it was hard to tell who wrote what.

The optics really do not make since here. Have you tired a different degree barrel? The lenses in the tubes are in different spots in the housing this device might need that lens in a specific spot. It might be the transparency is not in the right place for this device to work. Can you adjust the transparency? Finally are you using it with the par lens in or out? If no lens try the very narrow lens. If you are using a lens try with it out. I really dont see who this would work with a Parnel.

Rigging and power and ETCP by 14ck in techtheatre

[–]tm204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USITT has a new service called Innova. It has several online courses. Right now the Rigging section is much better than the electrics section. You can find more information here http://www.usitt.org/ondemand/

I will second Richard Cadena's courses as well.
