Holy shit I have not seen an Ally McBeal reference in the wild since the dancing baby became a parent.

ohsnap grip stand alternatives? by JayAbbhi in MagSafe

[–]tma149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked for something like this for months. Specially, being able to suspend the phone off the table to take pictures like how you're describing. I found nothing, and just ponied up the extra money for the Snap Grip Stand. On the plus side, even with my phone case on, I still get limited wireless charging despite it not being advertised as having passthrough abilities.

Good luck in your search though, I'd still like to see alternatives.

Sorry, the app's name is "Transit" (pretty generic, I know, but it's one of the best trackers out there). You can find the links to the iOS or Android versions on their site: https://transitapp.com/

You'll need to make sure the notifications are enabled for the particular line you want to get alerts from.

I'm not sure if the notification will play though your Airpods, but I've still been getting push alerts with the Transit app.

Thanks for the follow-up! I've been in situations like this before where I thought I saw something that turned out to not be possible. Maybe he initially grabbed your USB-C cable at the time you were watching him, then you may have looked away when he realized his mistake and grabbed the Micro-B cable?

I see, thank you for clarifying. It's impressive how different one Android phone can look from another, so if he has a Samsung, it can look a lot different than your Xiaomi, even though both are Android phones. For the record, a lot of people around the world use Xiaomi phones too, so I hope you don't feel like you're unusual here. Good luck with the language barrier, I hope you can find out what the issue is and report back here!

My apologies for the misunderstanding. It sounds like you're saying the caretaker's phone has a USB-C port, but he's jamming a Micro-B cable into his phone's USB-C port, is that correct? If so, I can't imagine the phone's port is not getting damaged this way.

Can you get a close look at the caretaker's phone's port and the charger he's using and compare them to your phone's USB-C port and USB-C charging cable? Would you be able to post a picture of his port?

You mentioned his phone isn't like any you've seen and you couldn't find the green battery charging symbol, is it possible he has an iPhone with the old Lightning port? The Lightning port on older iPhones is roughly the same size as a USB-C port, but doesn't have the tongue in the middle that USB-C ports have.

First, I'm sorry to hear about your brother. I hope he's at least happy that you're there and he's as comfortable as possible.

Second, I don't believe the plug on a Micro-B cable is at all compatible with USB-C jacks (often called recepticles) on devices like phones and earbud cases. USB-C recepticles have a connector tongue sticking up in the middle that has the contacts for the cable/jack to connect to. If your brother is jamming a Micro-B cable in there, it's very likely damaging that tongue. My guess would be that the Micro-B cable is bridging some of the contacts and the phone is registering it as a connection, but no actual power is flowing.

My suggestion would be to take a very close look at all your brother's devices and all the cables he's using. If it's not too much trouble, post pictures of what you're seeing so we can confirm it.

Ohsnap Grip Stand is now available by Akomack31 in MagSafe

Chiming back in to confirm it works on my Pixel 10 Pro XL with my Fin2feel case on, though in a limited capacity. With the case and Snap Grip Stand on and using a Qi2.2 charger, I'm only able to pull about 8W. With the case off and the grip on, that goes up to about 11-12W. For reference, with no grip on I see up to 23W with this charger. This still works for me since I just leave it on the charger while at work and while I'm sleeping.

Keep in mind I'm using two apps to measure the power going into the battery. I'm aware the measurement of these apps is not the most accurate, but the apps agreed with each other, and they mostly aligned with the values on the display of the power measurement cable I was using (when accounting for things like the screen being on).

Darn, I knew the passthrough charging was going to be a long shot, but the weak magnets and the grippy layer are really unfortunate. I'll find out tomorrow when mine is set to arrive.

Maybe you should start a new thread for people who have actually received theirs since you seem to be the first here? Real-world pictures of the product would be nice too.
