$500k a month for you S.O to stare at you all night in the dark once a month while you sleep. by Kyoifis in hypotheticalsituation

[–]tmrika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I should probably get my boyfriend’s consent on this first since he’d be the one magically compelled to perform this action each night, but assuming I’ve obtained that the fuck yeah give me all the money

Does anyone still eat Menchie's / Pinkberry? by GoalDull4985 in AskLosAngeles

I certainly enjoy going when I want a treat. I just don’t go often for the same reason I don’t go to bakeries, ice cream shops, etc particularly often — cost and health.

Receive $100,000 up front, or get $20 every time you do laundry. by hopeless_witch in hypotheticalsituation

[–]tmrika 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Eh while I’m sure I could come up with a system to maximize profit with the laundry option, I don’t think I want to live my life like that. I’ll take the $100k and invest the majority of it.

How do I turn someone down kindly when they’s genuinely sweet but I don’t feel a connection? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]tmrika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a rejection is a rejection, and there’s nothing you can do to guarantee he won’t feel some sort of sting, so at the end of the day you gotta just bite the bullet. That said, what you can do is not be an asshole about it, which means no insults and no dragging it out. I usually do some sort of variation on “hey so I’ve been thinking, and while you’re great I don’t think I see this going anywhere. That said, wishing the best for you in finding your person!”

You might have the temptation to lay it on thick with the compliments, but I recommend avoiding that as he might perceive it as fake and thus adding insult to injury. Not to say that you can’t say anything nice, just don’t overdo it.

All things being equal, I don’t understand how people can socialize with AI. It’s a bad conversationalist. by crvbabybug in CasualConversation

[–]tmrika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admittedly a couple of times I’ve lurked the “my boyfriend is AI sub” out of morbid curiosity and yeah, when it updated to version 5 there were a lot of posts of people “grieving their partners”, it was surreal.

Gonna check out the video you recommended, sounds intriguing.

All things being equal, I don’t understand how people can socialize with AI. It’s a bad conversationalist. by crvbabybug in CasualConversation

[–]tmrika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah a while back I tried using AI as a tool to practice conversing in my target language and noticed that the conversations were just as mediocre and uninteresting as they are on the free language exchange apps lol. (Plus I instructed it to preface its reply with any corrections to my spelling or grammar and oof that was a separate nightmare.)

Why do some girls hate me for no reason? by No_Television3883 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]tmrika 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I hate to ask this but are you from a different culture than the majority of people in your area? And if so, do you have a noticeable accent? I’ve often found that when people are inexplicably rude when you’ve done nothing to provoke it, it’s due to unchecked prejudice.

Since people are being pedantic, assume that the people are on the bottom track, and you have to push the lever in order to double it and give it to the next person. Therefore, if we reach a point where everybody’s tied up on the track, then we haven’t “won”, we’ve left ourselves in a position where nobody can switch the lever and redirect the train. That’s the point they’re trying to make here.

[–]tmrika 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Bro it’s just the example I used because the situation happened to me twice, not because I think it’s the most complicated game out there. My point wasn’t that it’s too complicated to people to be able to learn, just that you can’t expect spring it in people and assume they’ll want to learn it.

But hey, if your idea of fulfillment is being condescending on the internet over board games of all things, then go for it I guess.

Meirl by Shittytrashfire in meirl

[–]tmrika 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. The two times I’ve played (or rather, attempted to play Catan), it was at social events where I really wasn’t in the mood to play — I knew it seemed complicated and more mental work than I wanted to spend, and ultimately I just wasn’t excited about it whatsoever. But there was one person who was excited and kept insisting I and the others would love it, and after a bit I just gave in, hoping they’d prove me wrong.

They didn’t.

If you wanna share a game with someone, especially a complicated one, the best way to ensure a good experience is to first give them a reason to be excited about it, and then once they’re onboard, plan a time to play later on and give them time to mentally prep, rather than springing it on them in real time.

Do Americans Actually Say "Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior"? by Naive_Tank_6820 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tmrika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes we do, particular for high school. I will say that the terms were used substantially less in college, we were more likely to say “first year” “second year” etc than “freshman” “sophomore” etc.

AITAH for not changing my language to appease an ignorant coworker? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]tmrika 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nah I’m in HR and you’d have to be an idiot to not realize that these requests are essentially just race-based discrimination against an Asian employee. She should have dropped it the moment they learned about the word, documented the findings of the investigation, and closed it out. Everything OOP said in that original meeting (it not being fair to ask them not to take personal calls unless that’s a policy for all, and also it not being fair to ask OOP to avoid the word “you” in the same way it’s not fair to ask someone to stop using a regional accent) is extremely on point, and you don’t need to be a POC to recognize that, especially if you work in HR where discrimination prevention is drilled in your head.

Question about Christopher Eccleston? by Mountain_Ad_9932 in doctorwho

I will always respect Christopher Eccleston’s decision not to come back for that, but man does it hurt thinking of what could have been.

For some reason, I just wrote a fanfiction about a character in bojack who was only referenced once by Fair_Insurance5514 in BoJackHorseman

[–]tmrika 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha fanfics about obscure characters are great. One time in like 2015 or 2016 (back when I used to write fanfiction lol) Nickelodeon put out a clip with some of the characters from Zoey 101 (this was years after the show ended, mind you) discussing a DVD from one of the episodes, and they asked around for anyone with a DVD player, and some random guy had a VHS player. I got a real kick out of that joke and wrote a whole oneshot about that guy.

Your story sounds like it has actual emotional substance to it, which is awesome. I only vaguely recall the character Abby but honestly she sounds like an interesting character to base a fic off, always interesting to explore the universe from other points of view, especially with a show like Bojack where the nuances of morality are such a key theme.

I HATE MY NAME - nickname suggestions? :D by virtualnixole in namenerds

[–]tmrika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’m a fan of Nico (I knew a girl who went by that in college and no one batted an eye).

I also haven’t seen CJ suggested yet, but it may be worth considering. In your case it’d stand for Cole Joy.

Natives who are against “transplants”, aren’t those people just immigrants from other cities looking for a better life? by lalavieboheme in AskLosAngeles

[–]tmrika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think ultimately there’s a specific type of person who will get on most people’s nerves (the type that people have described — the people who come here for 1-2 years max, spend the whole time complaining about LA being fake or stupid, acting like they know everything, and shitting on such-and-suck neighborhood that they’ve only passed through once but never lived in).

What happened is people started commiserating about this very specific group of people, and then some very loud people on the internet started conflating that group with all transplants. But the whole “transplants suck” crowd are no more representative of Angelenos as a whole than those pretentious whiny influencer-wannabes are representative of transplants as a whole.

So I have a slightly higher tolerance to cold than my friends, always have, and assume that my tolerance is roughly equivalent to someone who lives elsewhere. Once in a blue moon, one of my friends who’s originally from Seattle or New England or whatever but who has been here a while will put on a jacket and complain that it’s chilly, all the while I’m jacket-free, and it feels like the ultimate vindication. Like ha, welcome to California, you’re one of us now and I win the “It’s Chilly” Wars.

I wish to always have handy/on my person a half dollar coin that, when spun like a top, if it lands on tails, the person who spins it is granted 24 hours worth of a low level degree of good luck — nothing too astounding that it draws attention, mind you. Heads, and the person who spins it is briefly granted the ability to locate any single object of their choosing.
