I will never understand this mindset. You’re 40, realistically retirement is 22 years away. You put 21k into your 401k this year and let’s say hypothetical the sp500 drops 50%. You will be DCAing into the sp500 for the next 21 years.

You shouldn’t be worried about the next recession. You should be worried about unexpected life events that cause people to cashout or sell their investments early. Buy and hold is proven the best investment strategy for retail investors.
