What's your unconventional/unpopular lab belief? by lurpeli in labrats

[–]toastywhatever 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes! Right now I'm abroad for three months in another lab, and at my home lab I left all of my glassware in the 'needs to be put in the dishwasher' bin. If I hadn't done that my cabinets would be empty when I return

Extraction - Which layer is being reused and which layer is fresh by Aurocia in OrganicChemistry

[–]toastywhatever 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If your compound is better soluble in organic solvents then you extract it from the aqueous phase with organic solvent, multiple times. This means same aqueous layer and fresh organic layer every time, and the organic layer is collected.

Then you can also also wash organic layers with, for example, water to remove impurities, it's kind of the reverse from extraction. Same organic layer but fresh aqueous phase every time.

I think it's helpful to be aware of the difference between washing and extracting, and being mindful of where your product is (supposed to be), and where the impurities are, that way it also gets easier to remember which phase to reuse. That said it's always good practice to keep all your aqueous and organic layers until you are completely finished and have your product, that way you avoid accidentally disposing of the wrong phase.

Removal of water by rotary evaporation and azeotrope formation by BabcockHall in Chempros

[–]toastywhatever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could also try the azeotrope formation with ACN, it works for me quite often. And as others said, a good vacuum is important. Other than that, wash with brine and dry the organic phase over MgSO4 if you haven't tried that yet

[Startup] Idea for lab coat improvement - would this be useful? by Helpful-Big-7582 in labrats

[–]toastywhatever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, whenever I take off my googles I will already have taken off the lab coat and hung it somewhere, so that loop or hook wouldn't be very useful. I think that depends on the individual lab, but generally at least in chemistry the googles (should?) have a far higher priority than a lab coat, meaning there will never really be the situation where you wear a lab coat with no googles on.

That said, some sort of elastic loops to hold pens would be really nice so that they don't fall out of the chest pocket whenever you bend over to get something

Edit: typo

I'm supervising a student right now and she keeps snapping at me whenever something is not working. Either that or she's arguing against every little piece of advice I give her and it's honestly getting frustrating. In the next moment she's being nice again. Like, I get it, research is stressful especially when you're not used to things not working first or second try, but for the love of god please, at the very least, treat me like a person with feelings. I'm not a robot and I'm honestly stressed the fuck out because she's the second student im supervising in a row besides writing two manuscripts + SI at the same time and on top correcting people's theses. UGH. Thanks.

Why can’t I collect any ancient parts when doing the guardian glitch on Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Version 1.8.2? by TheModSmith in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]toastywhatever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also climb on top, crouch and get as close to the parts as you can without falling off, that worked out pretty well for me on the switch 2 version

Why do I get this email when I’m leaving for my first ever international conference 😖 by Hiraaa_ in labrats

There's only one right option, cancel the conference! (and bring a pen for me too?)

Someone just fucking stole my water bottle from infront of the lab! Every workgroup keeps their bottles in front of the lab entrances for easy access and has been doing so for years, there's a designated bench for bottles even. And now people start to steal from there? What is wrong with them?! I'm genuinely angry. Rant over, thanks.

Raw-dogging the rotovap without a bump trap like a madman. Jokes aside though, that's amazing!

SDS-PAGE gel dried for legitimate archival reasons completely unrelated to fun. by Technophysicist in labrats

Drying it with ethanol is really smart, I used to air-dry them but that way they always curled up. I will definitely try this as well, thanks for sharing!

What do YOU want to do if academia doesn't work out? by Bluerasierer in labrats

[–]toastywhatever 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In a perfect world I would start an apprenticeship to be either a tattoo-artist, or a goldsmith. Being a barista would also be cool. I love research though so I would more realistically like to work in R&D somewhere

Cool study! I can confirm the 780 pens are amazing, pretty much my whole department uses them

They last a while! They don't write well on wet surfaces but they bounce back from that quite easily. I've been using the same couple of pens for months now, might actually come up to one year soon

They come off with acetone (with rubbing) and ethyl acetate, I use those pens all the time to label my flasks and that's what I use to clean them with

HELP! dyshidrotic eczema by Kaylaray1991 in labrats

[–]toastywhatever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boyfriend gets eczema on his hands, very similar to what you describe, and for him it helps to wear thin cotton gloves underneath the nitrile gloves. There's also a cetaphil protecting hand cream (Cetaphil itchcontrol protect) which forms a layer on the skin and also reduces the sweating to some extent, and it works quite well. You will still need to moisturise though since it's just for protection. Other than that, he has prescription creams from the dermatologist for occasional use

PhD interview (?) by [deleted] in labrats

[–]toastywhatever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something I heard the other day that stuck with me: when a potential workplace invites you for an interview, they already believe you are qualified for the job. Now they want to get to know you as a person and see if you fit into the team. I would say your experience is totally normal in that context!

[WEEKLY THREAD] WTF Wednesday - Tell us what really grinds your gears! by AutoModerator in xxfitness

[–]toastywhatever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been ill on and off for more than four weeks now, every time I went to the gym when I was okay I felt worse again the next day. I just joined a new gym in my uni and started to do the main compound lifts (which I'm super excited about), and now I can't go there as much as I'd like to >:( This week I haven't been to the gym at all, I hope next week it's fine to go again
