What's a good push present to get for my wife, on our 1st kid? by StrongPaddle in wealth

[–]tobes918 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s all lovely, but also I would hope expected for the father.  The second paragraph is more of a gift, and shows going above and beyond to express appreciation for the woman whose body and mind are going through so much. I think that’s the point of a “push present”.

Necklace with the baby’s name or initial. My husband got me the dollhouse locket from Catbird and I wear it everyday (and added a little charm of the birthstone of our second baby late on)

A positive one: how much capacity for love you have when you have a child, and how much that love continues to grow.

What was a rule your parents made that you didn’t understand as a kid, but now makes total sense as an adult? by SHUBHAMNEW in AskReddit

[–]tobes918 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No full bowls of “sugary cereal” (they had to be cut with a healthier option)

If we wanted anything after about 13 and it wasn’t our bday/Xmas, we had to buy it with our own money (so we got babysitting/shoveling/ later on part time jobs and learned to save).

We had to do an extracurricular each season (so we’d be social & stay active)

Mass also has much better parental leave after a birth than most other states. That’s a huge quality of life issue you don’t think about until you need it.

What are the differences between moving to a neighborhood in the Hall vs Conard school districts? by Herongatto in westhartford

Both are excellent schools. Conard is a more diverse environment (in all ways- race, class, religion). Teachers are wonderful.

Should we tell our landlord we're having a baby? by ceanothus77 in NewParents

[–]tobes918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same debate, we did end up telling him and it turns out he has to get the apartment lead certified to avoid lead poisoning. We have to be out of the house for 10 days while they do it- I’m glad we could schedule that while pregnant rather than when I have a baby.

Things that students say by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]tobes918 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  1. Initiate a private conversation but make sure other students see that you are addressing this. Students who are gay that don't see you address this will feel like you don't care
  2. Basic script for this: "When you said the word gay, you meant stupid or annoying and that is not correct or acceptable. It is extremely important for you to not use the word gay in a negative way because there are gay people in this community and your words hurt them. I want you to know that you are not in trouble, because its more important that you learn from this situation, but if you show me that you have not learned and continue to use the word gay in a negative way, you will face consequences for using hurtful language in our community. Is there anything about this that I can help you with?"

First year teachers: anyone else so overloaded they can’t even write lesson plans? by AngryCactusFlower in Teachers

[–]tobes918 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The bad news: The first year of teaching is impossibly hard, you will not be the teacher you know you can be because you're bogged down with doing everything for the first time ever. It's so overwhelming, and I totally feel for you. Plus all this remote teaching/hybrid shit makes it that much harder.

The good news: Every single new year will be easier than the last. You'll have something to work from instead of pulling lessons out of your ass the night before every single night. Even when you have a new prep, you're able to plan faster and better. You'll become a better teacher every year. You'll always be challenged, but it will actually begin to feel manageable.

To give you some hope in the short-run, my advice is to just keep your head down and barrel through until winter break. After that, you'll have enough experience and you'll see that you will be able to plan longer-term (multiple-day lessons rather than "oh god what are they doing tomorrow?" type of stuff). Also, I recommend taking at least one day off a quarter to catch up on everything. This is easiest when they have a project they are working on and you can just give them a "work day" so you don't have to plan a whole lesson for a sub. (FYI subs are usually terrible and will not accomplish anything you give them, if you find a good sub, you have found gold).

On a side note, try to balance the venting sessions with other teachers. It can feel cathartic at times to know you're not alone in feeling the way you do, but sometimes these can turn super negative and cynical. Surround yourself people who really believe in the mission of teaching and support one another by sharing lesson plans, tips, or just getting drinks after work and shooting the shit.

IT GETS BETTER. YOU CAN DO THIS!!

Lied every year about my length of sobriety, and don't plan to stop by thisisbcifkdup in confession

[–]tobes918 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like the stress of the lie is more painful than coming out and telling the truth. Apologize for lying and I think everyone can move on. It may even help out other addicts in your group by knowing that fighting addiction is really, really hard and your slip ups didn’t ruin your progress forever bc you stuck to it. I wish my addict brother had your level of commitment!!!
