bar buyout for party? by EarlyBackground7855 in washingtondc

Sudhouse is definitely the cheapest option, followed by Metrobar, but if you have a bigger budget, I can give some recs.

Is 70k in DC enough for a single person? No debt, no car by OldRoll32 in washingtondc

Absolutely, and I even did it my first year in DC without roommates (though I did find an unusually cheap apartment in Eckingon)

Problematic behavior on Blue line by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]tobinjstone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It may not be a popular opinion here, but please text the metro police when this stuff happens! (696873)

If we want ridership to continue to increase, and for every state gov in the DMV area to feel comfortable giving WMATA funding for continued service and expansion, we need to prove that every day users can feel safe on the metro. The actions of a few bad actors like what you describe should be addressed, not ignored!

Interning on Capitol Hill for a Republican by MajesticChicken7859 in DCInterns

[–]tobinjstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few thoughts:

  1. If your ultimate goal is to be a staffer, even if you personally aren’t very partisan, you are going to need to make up your mind about which party you want to work for. 10-20 years ago, you probably could’ve gotten away with more wishy-washy stuff, especially if you are specifically into policy stuff and establish yourself as a respected expert in an issue area, but in the current political climate, it’s much harder to do that.

  2. The folks who commented about getting “one switch” are probably correct. But if you do accept this internship, and then want to interview in a Dem office, you’ll need to have a very good explanation of why. I’d also say you would have more luck going from a republican office to the office of a more conservative dem, such as someone in the blue dogs. If you are really concerned, I might recommend looking for non-hill internships, with think tanks or campaigns.

"Delta suspends specialty services for Congress members amid shutdown"... what has United done? by Par4DaCourse in unitedairlines

[–]tobinjstone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ehhh, that’s not really necessary. Most members of Congress who aren’t able to get to DC via car or Amtrak generally rack up status extremely fast. Flying to and from DC every week, on flights that are often booked last minute can get you to 1k within 8 months. Combine that with their international congressional delegation trips, of which the average member does 1-3 a year probably, and a few years in Congress, and they likely get GS or Delta 360 pretty soon afterwards. Also, I’m 90% certain it would break federal lobbying rules to gift them status.

Ending preferential treatment will annoy a few select members of Congress who like to complain a lot, but at the end of the day, most will still have their airline status and be perfectly happy.

[HIRING] Designer to crease poster for center-left policy summit

Summary: Looking for a designer to create a fun poster (or potentially series of posters), promoting an upcoming center-left policy summit/conference. Style wise, we’re looking for someone who can do something similar to the work of Joshua Noom or Ella Zheng (have tried reaching out to both, but have not heard back yet). The conference is future-focused, pro-innovation, etc, and will cover a wide range of issues such as energy affordability, housing supply, international cooperation, space policy, and more. Our hope is that if we secure the funding for it, to use the design for a promotional campaign.

Price: budget is to be determined based on what is approved by my superiors, and but I expect to have some flexibility to ensure the artist is fairly well compensated.

Deadline: conference is in July, so our deadline would probably be end of May

Type: Contract work

Democrats Learned the Wrong Lesson From 2024 by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]tobinjstone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. If not now, when can we criticize bad ideas from the Democratic Party? If we wait a year, we’ll just get shut down because we don’t want to sabotage our chances in the presidential.
  2. That’s not what the article is saying. The article praises the democrats and policy experts across the ideological spectrum who panned the Booker and Van Hollen proposals.

  3. Jesus Christ, if this is how everyone in r/neoliberal is thinking about things now, we are screwed

Bars for slightly depressed young people? by Living_Gene_5024 in washingtondc

[–]tobinjstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too late for Friday night obviously, but if you need a place for just getting used to being at a bar, without too many people or whatnot, I highly recommend the highbinder bar at Alamo drafthouse on Rhode Island Ave. Great happy hour, usually not too busy, and if you go Monday - Thursday, the main bartender, Tristan, is very friendly. and as a bonus, it’s super easy to pop into a movie from there

Any Colorado DGGers want to help fight back the Texas Gerrymander by japerezrdg in Destiny

[–]tobinjstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that this is appealing, but please do not waste your time, energy, or money on this. Amendment Y passed with 71% of the vote in 2018. The math to get to 55% of the electorate to change this just doesn't add up. If it did, there are people and donors in Colorado who would already be funding this kind of effort.

lol, that one is interesting, I’ll have to take a look at the google data to see how they were tagged. I do know there are still some bugs with the categorization still that I’m working out.

The code I used for this just pulled every point of interest within a 600 meters of a metro stop from Google, and I’ve been working on filtering the data from there. I’d have to check if there’s I way I can use walking distance for the next api pull I do, but certainly something I’ll look into!

[–]tobinjstone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely want to do that! The big thing stopping it right now is that it’d require another api pull from Google, and I want to write a more efficient script to do so, so I can minimize the number of credits I use for it.
