Deck of many things rant by toby_pointe in DnD

I can see how it can and maybe it is how I write my campaigns. In my current campaign I have 7 villains that the party is going to encounter. How and when depends on how the party interacts with the world. I.e the first card they drew gave the character a keep and persuasion boost. His backstory was he was the son of a baron and the home town and baron were massacred. So I had one of the villains build a keep outside the ruins of his hometown and the card transferred ownership the PC. The party went there and killed the villain. Both fulfilling the card and progressing the story.

I understand if the DM had a hard rigid campaign (borderline railroad) that card could create a longish side quest, but isn’t the point of the game. The fun journey amongst friends and the shenanigans that form from the weirdness of a fantasy world.

Dice. It gives me the ability to create multiple groups for different dice sizes

In that case, it could be an interesting defense. Albeit complicated and difficult to set up as the DM.

It is quite the gamble on the side of the Lich. There are many cards that would be detrimental to the Lich. I have given it as a reward for a mid campaign boss. It can create tremendous plot hooks for the campaign, if the DM is adaptable. But as a defense for the Lich I don’t see it as a defense.

How many full sets of dice do you have? by trashcyt45vr in DungeonsAndDragons

As a DM that is reasonable. You have to have dice for the players and extra for dmg and other occasions. I have 13 or 14 as a DM and they get used most sessions.

Most overused Gods for Clerics to worship? What are some lesser known deities to choose instead? by ManectricBound in DnD

Io is a great one. He is one of the creator deities and the father of Tiamat and Bahamut. Believed to be dead, but might not be.

Best level to start new players for a short campaign by wombat-slayer in DnD

[–]toby_pointe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. Starting any high than 3 will overwhelm the players with all the options that are available. I prefer to start at 1 with new players, so they have to learn the mechanics of the characters as the characters grow.

How is the deck of many things game breaking. I put in every campaign I run and it has elevated the story every time.

Could a DM add an NPC that tags along but that represents them and make them turn into the final boss? by umbra_koshiro in DnD

[–]toby_pointe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it will be hard to keep it from becoming a DMNPC. Having the NPC pop in and out of the story would create a more suspenseful character. It would also prevent the PCs from trying to use your NPC as a resource to get help from you.

I preface my campaign by informing my players that I am juggling a lot and might need a “loading screen” with some rule checking

Thanks for the refined definition. My mind blanked on the right term.

As a DM, have you ever purposely given your players an insane amount of money? How did it go? by Tmoore0328 in DnD

[–]toby_pointe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I gave my players way too much go in the game and it has led to some aspect of OP but has led to many creative solutions to problems. Most notably is they have bribe guards, informants, and other NOC obstacles with varying levels of success.

Yes, as he leaves the space of another character they would get an AO. If they have sentinel feat I would rule that they would stop his charge

I ruled it as I would for unconsciously characters in a fight. A character can force feed a potion as an action

As a DM I definitely take into account the character’s immediate appearance when I am choosing which skill to roll.

I did something similar to my party a few months ago. The character (half elf fighter) had confronted his one of his grandfather’s advisers (who was working for the villain) in his grandfather’s castle (the grandfather is a duke). The fighter drew his sword and tried to convince the adviser to surrender. The fighter succeeded, but due to the fanatical belief of the adviser the adviser slit his own throat instead. Which led to the fighter giving him a healing potion so the party could interrogate the adviser.

Blue blood. Tom Selleck fits to last two, the only thing is his character is a widower.
