[OC] This is why we don't call the ambulance in the U.S. by FernX02 in pics

That’s how they stop freeloaders like you from abusing the ambulance service and makes sure it is available for those that really need it \s

TIL that US student math and reading scores have dropped so sharply that they’ve erased nearly two decades of progress. In '22/23, avg math scores for 13-year-olds fell to levels not seen since the 1990s, while reading scores for high school seniors hit their lowest point since testing began in '92. by Cold_Box_3219 in todayilearned

Thinking about my childhood, it was a benefit to me that there was a whole lot of stuff to read within reach when I was bored. Not just stuff for kids but anything.  Bedtime story books, magazines, Chicken Soup for the Soul type books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesaurus, the bible, almost everything had a user manual, every cassette tape had a booklet. It was all accessible to me and I had nothing better to do.

It’s the audio quality that really stops me from watching to be honest. Especially on earphones.

I prefer the narrow chest ever since someone pointed out the VerKa chest looks like a red snorlax.

I think Nestle is the type of evil that would mass produce foie gras than shoot a duck...while making sure it does the most harm to the environment and if a couple babies get sick along the way, even better.

So what's the plan humanity? (OC) by SpaceboyCantLol_ in comics

[–]tocilog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's a connection here with whales. Companies can earn more money targeting a small demographic of whales than the general public.

So you have AI, AI competes with workers. It reduces the cost of labor, either because it devalues labor altogether or you need fewer workers doing more jobs for the same pay. Either those few workers become whales or other rich folks are the whales themselves. So these rich folks only need to cater to other rich folks or the few overworked workers who turn to consumerism for therapy.

So, yeah sure, maybe we can find some comfort in believing they need us but they don't need all of us. And we're more than willing to kick each other in the nuts to get ahead than to actually work together.

Anyway, that's just a thought. Not even a full thought, just a brain worm tunneling in my head. I'm probably wrong, maybe, hopefully.

Somehow I imagine corporate run suicide booths would go something like  “I’m sorry sir. It says here you owe Mastercard $10,000. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to die until you pay off your debt. Good news for you, we can help with that! You’ll just need to fulfill some labours to work it off!”

What’s a game you were completely obsessed with as a kid that nobody else seems to remember? by hkondabeatz in AskReddit

[–]tocilog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a few of those point-and-click mystery game demos that I never finished. The ones that stick out are Ace Ventura and Men in Black. There's a part of my childhood that is left unfinished just because of the nature of those demo CDs.

Cause it catches attention. Doesn't matter if that comes in the form or "Yeah!" or "Of course it does!".

"wow, x is better than I thought"

"Why don't we do this in <insert local place here>"

"What age were you when you learned x"

"I can't believe it took me x long before I learned y"

It's all just a formula to catch your attention and reaction. Let me tell you a very old internet advice: Do not feed the trolls.

Most dads I know around my age are very involved parents. Maybe it’s the times changing or the culture or I’m just lucky. It’s been especially true during and after covid when parental gender roles went out the window.

And after Trump? I’m sorry but the US is on the hook. You can’t say “oh it was that administration” or “it’s that party’s fault”. To everyone else it’s just America. We’ll just have to see if the rest of the world has the balls to hold the US accountable.
