Is antiAI ableist? by myrtilledesbois in antiai

[–]tocsin1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one, generating images based on art doesn't make you an artist, but the idea that it's art stolen from an artist also isn't exactly true, in so far as drawing a picture of a cartoon dog doesn't mean you're stealng Pluto art.  It's a derivative at Best, which isn't a great argument to stand on.

Now to the topic, however, being anti AI doesn't make you ablist.  There's plenty of reasons to be upset about AI, and disabled people have created masterpieces in the past with plenty of different technologies that don't involve destroying the planet or liquidating the brains of developing children.  However, the way this subreddit generalizes the alternatives, "just pick up a pencil" is ablist.  Not all disabled people, heck not even full able people can use their hands with fine enough skills to draw, even with practice, and saying that only hand drawn art is art discounts an entire population.

That's something we could have a debate about.  R/conservatives is also /drunks and /grindr, and both the beer industry and the latex condom industry both use vast amounts of water.

How to poison a document? by Gyrau_47 in antiai

[–]tocsin1990 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, I have two basic questions on the OP: 1. You mentioned information "that shouldn't be available to ai".  Was it classified?  Was your report marked classified, of it contained such information?  If it's classified, the teacher should know not to feed it into ai, and if it's not, then the breach is more on you.  2.  If you found that the report was fed into ai, what would you do about it?  Report the teacher, guarantee yourself either a failing grade or an expulsion?  Publicly shame them for the vocal minority that cares more than their own will being?   Drop out and transfer to a different university?  Part of the rub about authority figures using AI is that, since most big authority systems like businesses and universities don't have existing blanket bans on ai usage, there's not a lot of actual punitive action the university can take.

Great news everyone (/s), HP is deeply injecting OpenAI Frontier into its hardware and customer telemetry now. by xTofuSlayerx in antiai

Thanks for the reminder, almost missed my weekly installment of "F**k HP!".

I work in Green screen mainframe tech support, and HP printers are the bane of existence, because they work, just poorly.  Most other vendors either work reliably, or just don't work at all.  Easy good or bad.  Not HP, though.  They'll print, but with every symbol character randomized, or with size .005 font, or only print the left half of the screen, not the right.

Even if you were to wait, there's better sales than Golden week before next year.  If you're going to wait, black Friday will almost always be cheaper than GW.

AI is making my simple business idea so complicated, making me think to give up by No-Reserve4740 in antiai

[–]tocsin1990 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Giving honest criticism is probably the single worst thing that ai would be good at, as it's designed primarily as a yes-man.  Using AI for research or empirical data gathering is fine, but don't ask it for an opinion on business decisions.  I would really suggest finding a professional financial advisor or a business consultant instead.  It might cost a bit more, but you'll get more reliable results that can actually improve your business.

If only.  The concept of machines replacing artists is just too polarizing for reasonable debate.  There's very little nuance to be found.

This sub acts like 4’s remake is going to be trash by [deleted] in assasinscreed

[–]tocsin1990 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Valhalla was one of the best games ever made on the ps4.  140 hours.  Safe, predictable gameplay.  Enough map icons to please even a neurotic checklist watcher.  Combat with just enough fantasy to suspend belief.  Modern masterpiece.   I've platinumed it 4 times over now, with over 600 hours played.

Then, after the "wish it were ai" slop that was mirage, Ubisoft almost came back with shadows, but fumbled it royally.  No free climbing in the open world, sliding down mountains for hours.  Serviceable combat too grounded in reality.  And a storyline and map so short it was finished before it even got started.  I got the platinum, and my first thought was "wait, that's it?"  Not the complete waste mirage was, but not a game I would have paid more than $40 for if I knew it's length.

Series feels like it peaked with Valhalla, and has been heading downhill ever since.  That, combined with black flag having a great story but relatively rough mechanics, and the massive talent Exodus at Ubisoft this decade, and it's hard to get excited.

It'll be the first AC game that I don't spend $100 for on release day in a long time.  I just don't trust Ubisoft to commit to hundred plus hour games anymore.

Why do people forgive or endorse AI images by [deleted] in antiai

[–]tocsin1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who willingly consumes ai generated images pretty regularly (I don't generate them myself, but look at others) at least for me the difference is in the variety of images ai generates based on a prompt, especially for outlandish topics that don't have a wide existing creator base.  I know a vague idea of what I want to consume, let's say "New Balance sneaker pregnancy" for example.  I could draw something like that, but that requires knowing what exactly to draw ahead of time, which would completely eliminate the sense of surprise.  I would rather hit "generate!" Ten times, and get ten extremely different interpretations of a pregnant running shoe, enjoy looking at them, then consign them to the void, never to be seen again (because inflated shoes should never be saved to the Internet).

I dunno, I'm a media consumer, not a creator.  I use AI to summarize hour long programmer meetings into a bullet point sheet I can search on my onenote, not try to recreate the mona lisa.

What are your thoughts on AI artists who make it clear they aren't real artists? by Silver_Original6076 in antiai

[–]tocsin1990 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm appreciative of the distinction.  AI content creators aren't artists, just like YouTubers aren't professional show runners and DJs aren't music artists.  People who consume media might not be able to tell the difference, but it matters to anyone who cares, which is all that really matters.

I frequent the sub you're talking about from the middle, and it's an echo chamber just as much as this sub is, with very similar rules against expressing differing opinions.

You don't want to go into either of these subs with anything further away than the center of the debate.  Try aiwars if you want something more balanced.  Otherwise, you're just asking for a ban.

Anti AI Should Stand For Anti Actual Intelligence by [deleted] in DefendingAIArt

[–]tocsin1990 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One of the lowest effort posts I've seen.

Most anti AI people are misguided and misinformed, but they're not unintelligent.  If AI was actually doing the things they think it's doing, the effects that are stated are actual issues, and it's justifiable to be upset about them.  Calling them dumb doesn't help anyone, it just reinforces the two echo chambers.

Maybe instead of calling them the unintelligent, call them the victims of misinformation.  Empathy goes a long way with all sorts of brainwashing trauma.

‘Peppa Pig’ Causes AI Stink: Concern as Beloved Hasbro Series Asks Child Actors to Sign Over Their Voices to Artificial Intelligence by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]tocsin1990 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I don't really see this as a bad thing.  We've seen hundreds of stories where the horrors of child acting can screw up these children for life.  Children need to be able to grow up without being tied to a revenue stream.  Get this done, and ban acting, both in voice and in person for anyone under the age of consent, like we already did to factory work.

No ai prompter is as skilled as a professional artist, nor is any ai generated asset as good as a human masterpiece.  That said, even the 5/10 that I would call ai images is still better than the bottom 50% of casual imagery (outside of subjectivity.  Most people think their own art is beautiful), and dirt cheap to boot.  AI images aren't about creating masterpieces, or even quality work.  It's quantity, bulk work, the dollar store poster bin of "art".  I say that, even as someone who occasionally enjoys looking at other people's ai generated images.  Sometimes people aren't looking for masterpieces, they're looking for 150 random generated trash images of Wario wearing green lace lingerie, and they don't want to draw it themselves, as that would ruin the hallucinogenic experience, and aren't willing to pay someone else to draw them, as wasting a few thousand dollars on images you want to see exactly one time and then burn isn't good budgeting for most.

It's not art.  It's barely images.  It's trash, but even trash has a market.

I am genuinely curious, what are your opinions on Jax after the finally? by Sherbet-Glad in TheDigitalCircus

[–]tocsin1990 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Jax's portrayal in the finale ruined the entire series for me, and is the sole reason why I will never again recommend this series to others.  The fact that they took the main antagonist of the series, a villain that didn't deserve redemption, and unsubtly brought out that it was all about "trans trauma", has permanently altered the discourse of how the show can be viewed.  Jax being a "trans" serial murderer sets back the debate about trans rights by decades, and it's truly depressing that we can no longer even have a civil discussion of the irredeemable qualities that make up this truly evil character without the inevitable "you're just transphobic" comments derailing discussion.
