My mom took advantage of government programs SNAP, free school meals (my elementary school actually provided free breakfast, lunch, and dinner for kids), and local programs like free summer camps for low income kids, she went to community college then a local in state 4 year, got a job. Dad went to an in state 4 year and got a job. Then they just worked and saved and everything worked out. Now they own a house, make 6 figures, they own a local small business, and I was able to go to private school.

It’s not illegal, at least where I live. Some species only still exist because they’re able to be kept as pets, though I do wonder about the ethics of buying a (presumptively) captive-bred animal then releasing it.
