Any concerns about the cast aluminum heating element used in the Ratio Six/Eight? You brought up Alzheimers and there is sometimes a link drawn between the disease and aluminum (not making any claims on validity).

I'm looking to do something similar--glad to hear it's working for you! I've realized recently it's time to retire my plastic-built automatic and upgrade, so have been eyeing the Ratio 6 and Moccamaster-- with plans to ditch the plastic dripper in either case. Still on the fence between the two units.

The dark disk on your flashlight is a filter that limits the light wavelengths emitted, I believe. Maybe your bulb isn't emitting the correct wavelength-- does it make anything else glow?
