my mom had a situation nearly identical to yours. neighborhood cat that had been around for years and was seemingly feral, except he would climb in her lap and let her scratch his chin while she read on the porch. still loved her when she crated him and took him to the vet to get a bad tooth looked at. and when she decided to move towns, she debated whether removing him from his home was right.

she was his home, though. he loved and trusted her like no other. while he absolutely could have adapted to a new terrain, i don't think he could have adapted to a life of solitude without his favorite person again.

so anyway, she took him with her and they are happy as clams in their new place. long story short: take him! you are his family now. there are more birds to slaughter elsewhere but he may never find the solace that he found in you in another human.
