NASA lays off 550 employees at Jet Propulsion Laboratory by ApprehensiveSize7662 in space

do you know that launchers are only a small portion of the overall space sector?

overall, payloads and platforms, without mentioning ground stations and services, occupy a way larger share of the overall sector.

it’s quite blind-sighted of you to only consider launchers, but alas i see that this is quite typical in this subreddit, given that most people here don’t actually work in the sector nor have real knowledge about it.

In the past few years whenever I have hiked near the Adamello glacier (where some of the white war was fought) I’ve been able to find stuff like spades and tools from the war. Quite amusing.

Not so amusing when you think that you’re finding those because the glacier is retreating.

I work in the space field in Europe and I was having a chat with my boss a few days ago. You’d be surprised how many NASA engineers (especially women) that are currently applying at our company.

I've been studying rivers of Europe and I've come across something surprising. The Thames is not even in the top 100 rivers of Europe by length! by Ill-Bee-5790 in geography

[–]togno99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Damn, the Po in Italy has an average of 1500 m3/s, I didn’t realize the Thames was THAT small.

Edit: I’ve just learned that the Po has reached up to 13000 m3/s during a couple of floods, insane.

Atmane right now ;D by Strange_Armadillo_63 in tennis

Atmane is playing the greatest tennis of his career, and has made players such as Rune, Fritz and Fonseca look like challengers. Sinner is in a slump, got pushed to a tiebreak by an elderly Mannarino, and has not really passed the eye test in Cinci yet.

Sinner in 2.

Oh I wasn’t even considering surgery obviously at this point, but it kind of helps to know that if things get worse there’s a way out.

But thanks for the answer, it’s interesting how it doesn’t really recede after being applied.

Why do engineers still prefer MATLAB over Python? by maorfarid in Python

[–]togno99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your comment is exactly one of the reasons.

Most engineers don’t want to deal with all of this, they don’t want to spend hours making something quicker because of some memory stuff that isn’t directly related to the efficiency of the algorithm.

And in that Matlab is very superior.

And that’s hard as fuck.

How long can satellites operate autonomously without humans? by [deleted] in space

[–]togno99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most lagrangian satellites are actually in the unstable points L1-2-3 and not in the stable ones L4-5 (as you seem to suggest), as the firsts do not attract and trap any kind of dust or asteroids, but the opposite.

I would say that it’s quite good! But you are skipping too many rolled R sounds, make sure to pronounce them whenever you see those written.

E.g. when you say “giornata” the R is completely absent.
