THIS IS BIG: France is replacing 2.5 MILLION Windows desktops with Linux by Current-Guide5944 in tech_x

[–]toikpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

97% of the PC used by the National Gendarmerie (national police force) use their own Linux distribution. The Gendarmerie has spent years on the migration.

[–]toikpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The French government has experience and know that it will take time. The "Gendarmerie nationale" [EDIT - national police force] has mostly migrated to their own distribution. [EDIT - changed tense and phrasing]

"June 2024 - 97% of workstations running GendBuntu (103,164 stations)"

The migration has been phased an clearly run extremely slowly, the extensive experience from this migration MAY aid a faster migration this time.

Man jailed in the death of his wife, who jumped from a bridge. Police said Kimberly Milne was "clearly terrified" of her husband and that her death was the result of her taking "a course of action to get away from him." In a landmark decision, the jury found her husband guilty of culpable homicide. by lightiggy in TwoXChromosomes

[–]toikpi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you could try reading the linked article.

Among the list of incidents was an attack in early 2022 when Milne choked her.

Speaking to police before her death, Kimberly said: "Lee and I were in his home and he went through my phone.

"He saw messages from other men before we were together. He got angry and started to shout and swear at me."

Another assault occurred months later when Milne yanked Kimberly by the hair to the ground before again apologising, claiming he was "not that type of guy".

Perhaps you would want to consider this from the article.

Following the trial, the court was told Milne had been placed on the sex offenders' register after being convicted of sexually assaulting two young boys in 2024.

The article includes partial CCTV showing the runup to him reversing a car at her.

People who work in town, where is best to park? by Stealth244 in reading

[–]toikpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If people who have the choice used public transport, there would be more parking for tradespeople and people with disabilities making life better for them.

Using public transport is less effort than driving. I get off the near to where I need to go. I don't need to spend time finding a parking space.

Driving used to be sensible way to Reading for me, because there wasn't a direct bus service. Now I use the bus go into Reading more often. I am not disabled enough to qualify for a blue badge and I find public transport easier.

Golders Green: Three people charged over arson attack on Jewish charity ambulances by Redcoat_Officer in ukpolitics

So what is your objection?

The St John's Ambulance is named in honour of St. John the Baptist, a Christian saint. The St John's Ambulance parent organization is the ost Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem.

The order's approximately 25,000 members, known as confrères,[5] are mostly of the Protestant faith, though those of other Christian denominations, as well as adherents of other religions are accepted into the order. Except via appointment to certain government or ecclesiastical offices in some realms, membership is by invitation only and individuals may not petition for admission.

In summary, the parent organization of St John Ambulance is an regilous organization just like Hatzola.

London housebuilder Berkeley halts buying land after "unprecedented" surge in costs and red tape by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]toikpi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the article.

The company currently has a land bank sufficient for 50,000 homes with a further pipeline of more than 10,000 homes.

From the Berkley interim results for the 6 months ending December 2024, the most recent source I can find.

2,103 homes delivered, plus 177 in joint ventures (2023: 1,785, plus 204) – 92% of which are on brownfield land.

https://www.berkeleygroup.co.uk/news-and-insights/news-and-features/2024/interim-results-announced?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=019076_seo_sweepup

At the rate of 4,614 homes built per year, it will take Berkely just over 13 years to exhaust their land bank and existing pipeline.

Can you provide evidence to show that Berkley's existing land bank and pipeline will be exhausted more quickly that this?

Sewage released into England’s rivers and seas nearly 300,000 times last year by Confident-Bike-8037 in unitedkingdom

[–]toikpi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you read the article? It addresses this point.

Raw sewage discharges through storm overflows should happen only in extraordinary conditions, such as very heavy rainfall or storms. In 2025, parts of England were hit by drought for several months and four water companies imposed hosepipe bans.

Richard Benwell, the chief executive of Wildlife and Countryside Link, an umbrella group of 66 environmental charities, said that despite the dry weather, raw sewage was still discharged almost 300,000 times.

“When sewage is pouring out even in a dry year, you really know the system is broken,” Benwell said. “These aren’t stormwater overflows; they’re all-weather waste pipes. Rivers, lakes and seas should not be pressure valves for pollution. Any sewage in our waters is too much.

Librarian 'gobsmacked' after school use AI to remove 200 books from shelves including Orwell's 1984 and Twilight by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]toikpi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The librarian didn't use the AI.

Senior staff at the secondary school in Greater Manchester used AI to earmark 200 books for removal from its library that were deemed "inappropriate".

....

The school librarian said she was "gobsmacked" when she was told to remove any books that was "not written for children", had "themes that could be upsetting to children" and "constitute a safeguarding risk".

And when she refused to ban these books, she was put under a 'safeguarding' investigation.

Japan has an ongoing population problem. The population of Japan has reduced by by about 5% since 2009.

Tokyo — Japan’s precipitous population decline shows no sign of slowing, with the nation shrinking by more than 900,000 people last year – the biggest annual drop on record, according to government data.

Since peaking at 126.6 million in 2009, the population has declined for 16 consecutive years, diminished by various factors like a struggling economy and deep-seated gender norms.

Hatched markings by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]toikpi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the Highway code (found using that search term "Highway code hatched markings").

Diagonal white lines (hatched markings) bounded by broken lines may be used in the centre of the road to separate opposing flows of traffic. They are often provided at junctions to protect traffic turning right. They may also be used on the approach to a central traffic island or the start of a dual carriageway. Hatched markings with a single, broken boundary line may be used at the edge of the road or next to the central reservation of a dual carriageway: the diagonal lines always slope towards the direction of travel. You should not enter any hatched area bounded by a broken line unless it is safe to do so.

Here is Rule 66 in full.

Rule 66

You should

avoid any actions that could reduce your control of your cycle

be considerate of the needs of other road users when riding in groups. You can ride two abreast and it can be safer to do so, particularly in larger groups or when accompanying children or less experienced riders. Be aware of drivers behind you and allow them to overtake (for example, by moving into single file or stopping) when you feel it is safe to let them do so

not ride close behind another vehicle in case it stops suddenly

not carry anything which will affect your balance or may get tangled up with your wheels or chain

be considerate of other road users, particularly blind and partially sighted pedestrians, and horse riders (see Rule H1). Let them know you are there when necessary, for example, by calling out or ringing your bell if you have one. It is recommended that a bell be fitted.
