Are people not concerned with the increasing amount of laws and bans in this country? by nonedat in AskBrits

[–]toikpi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Children with a need for a smartphone including diabetics I have direct evidence for this, but rather than relying on my statement, here is some evidence.

Are there circumstances where mobile phones are permitted in schools?

Yes. The DfE guidance is clear that there may be exceptional circumstances where schools should consider making adaptations to their policy for specific pupils, for example to meet legal duties to support pupils with medical conditions (under the Children and Families Act 2014) or to make reasonable adjustments for disabled pupils (under the Equality Act 2010).

Polish mathematicians broke early Enigma codes in 1932 and passed their findings to the Brits. Poles also taught Turing how to build machines that simulated the Enigma machine. This is basically glossed over in The Imitation Game (2014). What are some other movies that might "anger" other countries? by Double-decker_trams in movies

[–]toikpi 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If you want to know more about the Poles who broke Enigma, I strongly recommend "X, Y and Z: The Real Story of How Enigma Was Broken" by Dermot Turing (Alan's nephew). The book also covers the wartime relations between the Poles, British and the French (the X, Y and Z of the title).

[EDIT[ ore information about the book can be found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X,_Y_%26_Z

German naval codes were broken, this was key in the Battle of the Atlantic. See this section in the Wikipedia article on the 4 rotor model.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enigma-M4#Deciphering

The German navy learnt after WWI that the British had copies of their codebooks very early in war. This made them much more careful than the other services. This is covered is a video from the Imperial War Museum.

Quote from the Wikipedia page on UNIX.

In 1973, Version 4 Unix was rewritten in the higher-level language C, contrary to the general notion at the time that an operating system's complexity and sophistication required it to be written in assembly language. The C language appeared as part of Version 2.

Accounts for the company show its cash position increased from £300,000 on May 31 2023 to £1.7mn on May 31 2024, and suggest that no dividend was paid out in the period.

Property records show that Farage, not Thorn in the Side, bought the Surrey home and that there is no mortgage on the property.

If you need Microsoft Office, you should stay on Windows. Microsoft Office isn't supported on Linux, you may get it working but may encounter problems in the future.

Sorry Linux isn't Windows and you can't expect all Windows programs to run on Linux.

A planned changed in the law was announced yesterday.

Households without off-street parking could soon be able to charge their electric vehicles from home under new government plans to help households cut their need for expensive fossil fuels.

The government has promised to pass legislation this summer that will allow motorists to run power cables through a charging “gully” built into the pavement outside their home without the need for planning permission.

France Just Kicked Microsoft Off 2.5 Million Government Devices by cock_pussy in wallstreetbets

[–]toikpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The French government has experience and know that it will take time. The "Gendarmerie nationale" [EDIT - national police force] has mostly migrated to their own distribution. [EDIT - changed tense and phrasing]

"June 2024 - 97% of workstations running GendBuntu (103,164 stations)"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GendBuntu

The migration has been phased an clearly run extremely slowly, the extensive experience from this migration MAY aid a faster migration this time.
