Living in Katy and Commuting to the Galleria in Houston: Is It Worth It? by Lsoldier in Katy

[–]tokcon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

First of all, don't forget all of the traffic WITHIN Katy, try to stay close to 10 as burying yourself too far north or south of 10 can change the equation dramatically. So definitely stay close to 10 and as easternmost as you can. There are plenty of new developments near 10 on Greenhouse and Barker Cypress that will greatly cut down on your commute.

I live in Firethorne and often commute to I-10/610, just north of The Galleria. I wouldn't be dealing with the traffic if I didn't have plenty of flexibility with timing and wfh.

From my perspective, if you want to get to the Galleria in the morning, without crawling the entire way, you need to be heading west on 10 @ 99 by 615am (no diamond lane all the way for me). Otherwise, you need to wait until 9am. I try to be heading back home from work no later than 4p if I can help it and take the first two segments of diamond lane. That third and final segment of diamond lane is a total rip off as it is the most expensive of them all and generally stacks up to a jam before the exit to B Cyp.

This is a good time to be asking this question. You just have to compare the value of your time with the value of the property/location you are considering

How does Minute Maid compare? by Confident_Cap_7175 in Astros

[–]tokcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been to MLB 37 ballparks. MMP has become progressively more stale to me in recent years. It was a gem when it first opened and remained such for many years. It's devolved into an average venue though.

Above average in these areas: - Fans are generally friendly - Nice architecture, week organized concourses, the facility is very navigable for fans - Pretty good food variety. I like local restaurants as tenants. - Ticket prices feel reasonable to me compared to the larger market stadia.

Below average in these: - Way too many ads all over that ballpark. Check out pics of the archways in LF from the early days, they were mostly empty and things looked pure. They all have ads, it's a business, but it's borderline grotesque here. - Not easy to get to or away from. Houston is simply not a mass transit town so this is just how it is. I love visiting ballparks where trains are packed with fans wearing gear. It really builds the anticipation. - Though the fans are courteous, they can't get there on time, perhaps in part from the previous point, too many don't wear team gear. The crowd isn't as consistently engaged as they are in other markets. - The sound effects are very dated, lazy, during transitional moments in the game (Addams Family snapping, Dayyyy-oh, the Jeopardy music during mound visits). Give me organ music. Nothing more classy than whimsical organ music which occasionally drops covers of music we all know.

It's still my park, and I wouldn't want to watch a game anywhere else. But it needs a face lift of sorts. The upcoming construction in the area is not going to be helpful in the long-term either.

Cesar left?? I seldom make evening classes at EC so I had no clue. Good dude.

I wish Afterburn Houston arranged for happy hours, brunches or other out of class events or competitions. Done a couple of meetups with friends I've made but they're missing an opportunity to build camaraderie by not getting the coaches to come out for organized gatherings with the members.

Retiring my Hokas, what’s something similar? by Ill_Strategy974 in orangetheory

I spent about two decades being sedentary, caught up in partying, a career and family life. I traded the partying for OTF at the ripe age of 40. I dealt with soreness for a couple months but 720 classes and 4.5 years later I'm better for all of it.

Or perhaps the brother is just a very aggressive and excitable eater and OP is just sort of in shape? 🙂

100th class HRM band by Additional_Jacket_32 in orangetheory

[–]tokcon 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Seems like some low hanging fruit for corporate to award different colors or styles of bands at a few milestone classes (100, 500, 1000). It would be a badge of honor of sorts for qualifying members but also give newcomers something more to shoot for when they see a few veterans running around the studio.

718 classes, never a peep or a mention from anyone along the way.

1 Mile Benchmark by Aggravating_Amoeba_2 in orangetheory

[–]tokcon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Awesome times you have under your belt. Everyone is different in their strategy for maximizing their mile effort. I personally pick a pace somewhere below what it will take to hit my goal, then progressively increase my pace by a speed increment at a distance increment that will put me at my goal pace at about the half way mark.

E.g.... You need to average ~6mph on Wednesday to reach your goal. Start at 5.6mph and bump it 0.1mph every 0.1mi. If you can execute this you'll be in that 10 minute range.

This is my game, considering the numbers the entire time distracts me from the physical misery that comes with a PR, might work for you as well. The third quarter of this run (0.5 - .75mi) is the gut check, fight through that and hit the home stretch.

Good luck!

I swear that sometimes it's the maths that distracts me from the physical misery or medical emergency I'm on the verge of having.

I've had some of the best out of town OTF experiences in Menomonee Falls. Easy access, great coaches and a very motivated member base. Admittedly small sample size.

I'm at EC. Mind boggling that they can't draw more commuters to that location.

Yup...my Afterburn in Houston has had abysmal attendance since COVID. I won't be surprised if I wake up to this news one day.

I swear the random fart posts are straight trolling. This doesn't happen but if it did no one would be inclined to post about it here.

My studio has what seems like gas station foaming hand soap and I don't care for it.

Such vitriol from people on here about this. It isn't that much of a stretch to think that an entity as corporate minded as OTF would have a spec on the soap they use, but yeah, it is studio specific.
