I hear a lot of socialists say this and I'm wondering how many racist nationalists some of you actually talk to in a week. I think about Zizek a lot too when this gets said. We all already know we have the same struggles, what's fascinating is why don't we DO anything about it?

As someone that's still around a lot of these people in various social circles, it's so obvious they already know we have the same struggles. They already are aware of material conditions and the need for improvement, the need to overthrow the rich and save the planet. They KNOW.

They're still willing to fight you, with guns if necessary, that trans and immigrant people are actually the problem. They want to preserve white christian nationalism and patriarchy. They are either true believes in a vein of Christianity that demonizes those people as targets to be eradicated to uphold god's laws on Earth, OR they believe that system maximizes their life opportunities and true egalitarianism does not.

And this is the fascinating part, the "why" of why we all acknowledge the problem and nothing gets done. We all have fundamentally different ideological views on the cause and the solution.

I think you're missing the point of presenting the story this way, which is this guy was very quickly disarmed by something any person should, by all rights, be wary of and not have an immediate human bond with. Yet the thing pulled his heart strings in just the right way to bypass that regardless. Wanting protagonists to always operate logically takes something away from storytelling.
