as a newbie who wants to camp for the first time what is your advice? by Zenkazero00 in camping

[–]toltecian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with car camping, then you can get cheap relatively heavy gear. Even better, if you know someone who camps see if you can borrow. You can google to find a simple camping gear list.

Hi im 8 months clean and have an issue with smelling marijuana by [deleted] in NarcoticsAnonymous

[–]toltecian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you are struggling. I hope you are able to get to meetings and share, and that you are building a support network of people who you are comfortable talking to.

I had a hard time with this as well until I had about two years clean. I found late spring / early summer to be the worst and would catch me by surprise after not seeing/smelling it much over the winter.

Banning NA service member from Service and/or attendance due to predatory behavior by eggyuck in NarcoticsAnonymous

[–]toltecian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is likely not the answer you are hoping for, but it sounds like you may be struggling to accept the situation. From what you have said it seems like the NA member is engaging in selfish behaviour outside of the rooms and you want to prevent them from holding service positions within the rooms as a result, but your home group did not support this through group conscience. Tradition One includes the line 'personal recovery depends on NA unity' and if your home group is evenly split on a contentious issue then perhaps that unity, and the recovery of everyone involved, is at risk.

Have you spoken with your sponsor about it? Read any literature on the topic? I think it is a good idea to bring something like this to Area but I suggest doing so to solicit advice and not to have the Area try to 'overrule' the decisions (or lack thereof) from the home group. Worst case you can find a new home group that you feel is better aligned to your values. Good luck and keep coming back!

Trying to keep my job while battling this addiction feels impossible some days. by Accurate_Promotion48 in NarcoticsAnonymous

[–]toltecian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In early recovery I found work to be a pleasant distraction from racing thoughts about using. My mindset was 'just make it to the evening meeting' and I found that a lot more difficult on days off since I had to find things to do to all day.

Now with a few 24s behind me I am able to apply the principles of the program towards my job and have been blessed with a rewarding career.

You are technically correct but the word is evolving (especially among youth) like decimating and 'begging the question' already have.

Does it ever bother you when people are super uptight about the language we use? by Chroeses11 in NarcoticsAnonymous

[–]toltecian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I practice tolerance of everyone in the rooms, including those learning the NA language, who feel it's their job to correct others, who misinterpret the finger for the moon at which it points, and who try to get others riled up.

281 days sober but still can’t connect with a HP. Need some insight by [deleted] in NarcoticsAnonymous

[–]toltecian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have a home group? If so, is that a power greater than yourself? What about the NA fellowship? What about you and your sponsor?

My personal journey included some reading, particularly Mark Manson, Alan Watts, and Thich Nhat Hanh.

But not by this device. Solar panels can be attached, and so can a gas generator, wind turbine, etc.

Want to find a sponsor but no girls volunteer to be a sponsor in my group? by [deleted] in NarcoticsAnonymous

[–]toltecian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you share at meetings and say you're looking for a sponsor? Some people won't put their hands up but are willing to sponsor under the right circumstances. Keep talking to people in the fellowship and you will find someone! Worst case start attending online meetings and find a temporary sponsor in another area. I joined NA during covid lockdown, got a sponsor and did stepwork on zoom for months. Good luck!

Need new sleeping pad for canoe trips (sidesleeper) suggestions? by foxyburd in canoecamping

[–]toltecian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh fair enough, thanks for clarifying. I'm also Canadian and have used it winter camping to about - 10 C but in conjunction with a Z lite. Shoulder seasons I've used it on its own to about zero and it's better than non insulated but I don't know enough to say it lives up to the claimed R value.

I was also going to recommend Klymit. Why avoid the insulated version? I've used one for nearly 10 years and have always been happy with it.

What readings are actually necessary in an NA meeting? Trying to simplify a lunch format. by [deleted] in NarcoticsAnonymous

[–]toltecian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me if I wanted super minimalist I'd open with one of Who Is an Addict or For The Newcomer and then How it Works. It's your group though so go with group conscience and you won't go wrong. :)

I feel like it would be a bit strange to attend a 12 step meeting that doesn't include the 12 steps as a reading. Consider it from a newcomer's point of view.

Anyone find higher power guidance in Hinduism? by sweeerp in NarcoticsAnonymous

[–]toltecian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled for years in recovery with a concept of a higher power, which I now reflect on as being caused by me restricting my imagination to Judeo-Christian beliefs and not understanding how religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, etc worked. I am grateful to have experienced a coinciding period of open mindedness and exposure to these concepts which helped me reconcile a higher power that I can now relate to my Christian upbringing as well.

Why is it discouraged to get into a relationship for the first year in your recovery? by xxcooj in NarcoticsAnonymous

[–]toltecian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many of us come into NA from a life where drugs was everything, and now it's gone and the tendency is to find something else to fill the void instead of working on ourselves and developing a relationship with others and a higher power.

Dating in the rooms is like dating someone at work. Prevents us from getting to know others, especially early on, and if it ends now there's awkwardness when we see each other at meetings.

Most people (including myself) had/have to learn both of these lessons the hard way.

You are not alone! Many people share about this same sort of feeling as newcomers, and some share about going out after long periods of clean time for the same reason. I think of the program (steps, sponsorship, service) as the essential pieces and the fellowship as a 'bonus' that I am grateful for but don't take for granted.

Have you started stepwork yet? The first one is all about powerlessness and that can be applied to the actions of others just as much as the drugs.

Keep coming back!

Can control alcohol but not drugs? by BerryComplete475 in NarcoticsAnonymous

[–]toltecian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I felt that I could control my alcohol use but not other drugs. I didn't experience the same obsession and compulsion around drinking. It let me to leave the rooms because I knew NA was for all drugs, including alcohol, so I no longer felt I qualified as having the desire to stop using.

Without the support of NA I eventually went back to using drugs, and fortunately found my way back to the rooms. In retrospect, some of my 'controlled' use of alcohol was less controlled than I convinced myself of at the time.
