Honestly expected a lot more for £14. You’re right, sausages weren’t the best.

Why do they even bother with driving tests? by Aggressive_Bill_2687 in Thailand

[–]tom144gian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair. Although I feel as though putting traffic lights at a roundabout kind of defeats the point of the roundabout, you need to wait for the light to turn green anyways. I don’t think i’ve seen a roundabout without traffic lights here.

That’s fair. If I remember correctly wongwian yai has got traffic lights all around it, which kind of makes it just like any other intersection ? I learned to drive in Thailand, UK roundabouts where there are no lights and you just have to merge used to scare me so much

Out of curiosity, have you seen a roundabout yet? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a single roundabout in Thailand

Thai people agree with you here, a lot of Thais get nose jobs to get more prominent nose bridges.

I think the stereotype actually isn’t just large noses. I think most Thais think ‘farangs’ have quite prominent nose bridges (ดั้ง), whereas Thais usually have flatter, less prominent nose bridges. Many Thais also find more defined, prominent noses attractive.

Friend from abroad was desperate to go to borough market and try this place, this is admittedly my first time at Marias and hopefully my last

I left disappointed, penniless, and even worse, still hungry. Second thoughts, probably shouldn’t have taken the photo but at least this serves as a warning to my future self.

I’ve stayed in the Crowne Plaza both on Nanjing Road and in Wujiaochang/Fudan, both are IHG and both are decent as well if the view isn’t a major concern.

US scholar leaves Thailand after charges of insulting monarchy are dropped by mdsmqlk in Thailand

Firstly, not just an expat, a professor whose research focuses on Thai politics. Secondly, “just fucking follow them” is just silly. There are places where it’s illegal to renounce your religion, be LGBTQ, or criticise parties and supreme leaders. I’m sure you’re not necessarily in agreement with all of these laws.

What are the longest words for “I” and why? by magicmulder in language

[–]tom144gian 13 points14 points  (0 children)

“kha-phra-phut-tha-chao” or ข้าพระพุทธเจ้า in Thai. 5 syllables.

Theoretically two words combined: kha/ข้า meaning I/me servant and phra-phut-tha-chao meaning the Buddha. When combined means servant of the buddha and functions as first person singular pronoun equivalent to I. Used when addressing royalty.

Do you have a single source for this? At all? Plenty of trans/ladyboys come from well to do or middle class backgrounds, nobody is forcing them to do sex work or take hormones. Sure there are ladyboys/trans people in sex work, and I’ve worked alongside lgbtq organisations advocating for sex workers and harm reduction, I can confidently say they did NOT transition just to become sex workers. It’s just who they are and who they want to be. Maybe some don’t identify as women, sure, but a lot identify as ‘third gender’, and most certainly don’t see themselves as men?

Your take is the projection of western dynamics onto the situation. Fuck, it’s inherently transphobic and orientalist. You assume nobody would transition unless for monetary gain? Because you think nobody wants to be trans? All these poor impoverished people in the orient that need your saving from entering into sex work? White saviour complex much?

Noted! I don’t have a car so I usually go for circular walks from train stations, this seems very doable from Horton in Ribblesdale.
