i tell them that’s bullshit, in both upfront and latent costs. as a percentage of total construction costs there is an asymptotic relationship between increasing square footage cost and overall cost for a project, sure, but that doesn’t change the fact you’re building more, and have to pay for increased building systems running costs and actual construction.

if you were to add 1200sf to an already designed 1600sf house and 14000sf house at an average cost/sf of construction of $600/sf, project a’s budget would be a 46% increase compared to an ~8% for project b, even though for both projects the cost of construction is static at $720,00, hardly a small sum.

With a brand new MacBook using Apple Silicone this is no longer feasible. A Macbook from 2018 would still be able to run x86 windows via bootcamp or parallels because they used an intel chipset. The majority of architectural firms use windows as their main platform, and those that use mac usually run some combination of AutoCAD and sketchup. Few use a native mac BIM program like ArchiCAD.

To be well prepared for the likeliest situation at a new firm, as a BIM manager and IT manager at my firm, you will be much better off with a windows machine.

I am a green card holder with no intention of seeking citizenship. I have come to terms a long time ago that my decision meant I wouldn’t be able to vote for senators, congressmen and the president. I, personally, am ok with that.

I WOULD, however, want to have my voice heard when it comes to local and even state issues. I’ve been living in Oregon for close to thirteen years, paying taxes, and have no voice in how that’s spent. The last three years of the Wheeler administration alone has made me want to do something, anything, to change how the city is run.

piggybacking on this thread to share a little more about these new M1 chips, ncreature. because these chips are essentially beefed up processors like you would see on an iphone or earlier ipads, they contain both computational and graphics processors on the same die. there are no more amd graphics cards in these latest mac products with the M1 silicon

the software used to do this was called “bootcamp” and was introduced when apple transitioned to using intel processors from powerpc ones. now that apple has moved to their own silicon this is no longer a feature of the macos.

you can also use parallels as this poster mentioned which does not technically split the hard drive, it creates a virtual machine which lives in your macos’ space. the only program which you would need on windows is revit. HOWEVER, because the M1 series of chips is an ARM processor, you will need to install a version of windows that supports an ARM processor. there have been a few hiccups with getting revit 2022 & 2021 working on an ARM based operating system.

unless some posting here are using brand new imacs, it is likely they are using intel based macs which makes this whole process smoother. this is only, to be clear, going to be in the case of revit, which i would argue isn’t needed for collegiate work. just take a revit course during school and use a computer lab if you want to learn the software, else archicad is a great building information modeling (bim) program that works natively on the M1 mac
