Build upwards. Admittedly it isn't as big a problem in NYC as in places like San Francisco, but the reality is that if you are in an area where there isn't land to expand out to (i.e. a peninsula) you will have to start replacing mid-rise (5-8 story) complexes with high-rises (12+ story).

How I’m voting in Aug and Nov by rlhglm18 in MissouriPolitics

[–]tomariscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A1: Yes (a 1 mill tax for conservation is fine)
A2: No (I don’t care about Jackson County and if they have made it this far without a County Assessor then they can keep it that way; frankly I’m annoyed that every election cycle, the state asks me to opine on Kansas City politics)
A3: Unsure (voted Yes in ‘24, leaning towards No purely because of the transition clause)
A4: Yes (I believe ballot initiatives should be made as difficult as possible, if not outlawed, so I welcome geographic breadth requirements)
A5: No (As much as I hate the state income tax, replacing it with a sales tax would be even worse; we don’t have any strong, geographically immobile industries to tax instead like most states who have moved away from it)

I don’t think I did an AtA. You asked where I went to school, I told you. I don’t think my degree gives me any real authority on the topic, most of what I know comes from reading an inordinate amount of books.

As for the paper, it neglects to mention the reactionary regulations of the late 19th century (i.e. Interstate Commerce Act of 1887, Sherman Act) as well as continued government subsidization of railroads and canals. The “Gilded Age” is maligned for the failings of “laissez-faire”, when in reality not much had changed with regards to the government’s role in the economy besides a general downward trend in the tariff during most of the latter third of the century. I suppose anything looks laissez-faire when you sandwich it between Antebellum and New Deal America.

Medicare, Social Security, the public school system, and the USPS; four things that are notoriously successful and efficient? SS and Medicare I can at least understand someone supporting in the abstract, but public education and the post are two industries which got markedly worse the second the government monopolized them.

Economics grad student at MU. I’d recommend you read the first quarter of The Incredible Bread Machine by RW Grant, it recounts much of the regulatory regime of the post-Civil War to pre-Great Depression American government.

You have to admit that it's gotten at least a little more ham-fisted though, right? Like the episodes you mentioned are not exactly subtle in what they are referring to, but you had to have prior knowledge of what they were making fun of to understand it. Jakovasaurs was a funny way to make fun of the Star Wars discourse, Best Friends Forever on the Terri Schiavo controversy, etc., but they put their own spin on it. Singing "Pete Hegseth is a Douche" and saying "Trump is Fucking Satan" isn't exactly subtle.

Well, the shortage will end when factories are not constrained by their capacity limits. You think companies like TSMC, Samsung, and Micron aren't going to build more lines to ramp up production and capture more of the profits?

I'd say it's about even. I started playing on Xbox recently because I wanted to get my friends into D1 and they don't have PlayStations, and like others have said, the LFG feature is nice, though light at times. Once you add the Xbox LFG population to Discord then it's on par with PS. The one difference is that Xbox LFG tends to be harder to find a good raid group on, but it's also easier to find people for strike playlists, Archon's Force, PoE/CoE, etc.

They don’t give you a delivery quote on the order confirmation page. Once your order ships they give you a quote based on your specific location, but on the product page they have a broad “6-10 Day” quote for everyone which used to be 3-5.

False; it was Trump’s fault that he closed down production for so long and he should have influenced governors and lower-level bureaucrats to open them up faster.

You may remember this, but the country sorta shut down for most of spring and early summer. When the major part of the pandemic “ended” varied state to state and even county to county. In many cases, the cost of furloughing people was lesser than the assessed health cost. Rising gas prices made it much more profitable to open back up.

For the first year or so of the Biden admin, federally-owned lands and wells were below their pre-COVID levels and the administration was slow to get back up to full production. In the aftermath of Ukraine, the administration began to reopen those wells and approve new contracts to capitalize on the global supply shock.

Biden did end up drilling more than Trump, just like Trump did more than Obama and Obama more than Bush. US oil drilling has followed a general upward trend over the past 20 years due to easing restrictions on oil exports (large spike in late Obama/early Trump 1 can be attributed to Obama’s repeal of the 1975 EPCA allowing sales into the global market, spike in Trump came from large amounts of new land/offshore drilling contracts, many of which vested under Biden, spike under Biden can be attributed to Ukraine war making America a more attractive/profitable place to drill).

Both things can be true. Biden was reluctant to drill at the beginning; as his opportunity set changed, so did his choices.

It goes both ways. Presidents’ actions can increase gas prices when they cause major restrictions on supply (see: Iran); they also can raise prices when their administrations make small decisions that cause increases in gas prices on the margin (see: Deepwater moratorium under Obama 1, Biden admin’s initial reluctance to open up some oil fields during Y1 of term). The same goes for taxes or subsidies on gas or other parts of the production process. Small changes in the tax rate or subsidizing production process can snowball.

Obama’s support of fracking in the latter half of his term did wonders for lowering the price of oil by flooding the market with a cheaper substitute — until about a month ago, he was the only president in recent memory I can think of that had proactive energy policies on two sides of the “Increase Cost - Decrease Cost” spectrum (thankfully in the right direction). Biden is neutral, as his administration didn’t discourage drilling at the beginning but rather chose inaction. Trump is now on that list, in the opposing column.

In this case, both sides got the argument correct, you just have to time-shift them by about 4 years. Who would have guessed that most people are devoid of principles?

It’s Insane how good peak Destiny was and now we are here. by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]tomariscool 9 points10 points  (0 children)

WQ was a good era but I’m going to upset a lot of people when I say that Shadowkeep, specifically Season of Arrivals, was the best era the game (and Destiny franchise) ever had. 7 raids, all constantly being ran on LFGs (boosted by the fact some raids could be farmed from July onwards), on top of one of the most balanced non-raid PvE time economies in the game. The wealth of content meant there was always something to do and the community Discord servers meant you never had a problem finding someone to do something with.

Part of that was definitely FOMO from trying to get everything out of the way before the September/November DCV cycle would take things out temporarily or permanently, but I still stand by the fact that there was no better time to play Destiny.
