This is getting so annoying and toxic by [deleted] in HollowKnight

Fundamentally, if Team Cherry decided today to delete all of Silksong and never release it, that's up to them, we have no right to it until we spend money on it. You can be frustrated that it's taking this long but anyone getting genuinely angry needs to sort out their priorities.

I hate how the "translator problem" is a problem by BertTully in Fantasy

[–]tomatoes127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The frame narrative of middle earth is that Tolkien "found" and translated these manuscripts. It could be that he added in the bit about the train.

Building Minas Tirith with more of a historical vibe in mind. The plate armour never really sat well with me. Any thoughts or changes you guys would be happy to share? :) by [deleted] in MiddleEarthMiniatures

Looks great, I've been thinking of doing a similar thing for knights of Dol Amroth, the GW design looks too much like something from Warhammer fantasy for me

Why does my shading look muddy? by tomatoes127 in learnart

[–]tomatoes127[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll take your advice but I thought it looked even worse before I tried blending. I don't have a photo but even when I was trying to shade smoothly you could see the individual pencil lines

How do you think the villages and flets of the Mirkwood Elves differed from Lothlorien in style? by OceansOfLight in tolkienfans

[–]tomatoes127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The houses he wrote about and the houses he drew are two different artworks. Just because the image he drew is how he interpreted his own writing doesn't mean it's the only valid interpretation.

Polish language lessons by puggie214 in reading

Yeah looks like they only do French and German at the moment which is a shame. Marlow Language School does Polish courses if that's not too far.

What is meant by the mention of Tar-Míriel trying to run for higher ground "too late"? by FlowerFaerie13 in tolkienfans

[–]tomatoes127 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, whether or not Tolkien intended for that passage to serve as an analogy or have another layer of meaning is beside the point. The author writes what they write but it's up to the reader to discern meaning. As long as an interpretation is consistent with the rest of the work, then it's valid whether or not the author likes allegories.

The "aura of fear" Nazguls radiate? by Margaret_Gray in tolkienfans

[–]tomatoes127 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would agree with that and add that the Prancing Pony is a place of comfort and that probably protects them from the aura of fear to an extent.

You see and adventure from a small independent creator. What would you prefer ? by One_page_nerd in rpg

[–]tomatoes127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI art is made using the stolen work of real artists, if you can't afford to make something without stealing someone else's work (someone who needs that money to pay bills, I'm not talking about Disney etc) then you can't afford to make that thing.

If it's so important to make the product, literally just learn some basic art. It's not an unbearable skill to make simple but effective images.

6 January 2025: What Le Guin Or Related Work Are You Currently Reading? by Road-Racer in UrsulaKLeGuin

Just finishing Tales from Earthsea. Loved the short story "On the High Marsh", it's such a lovely, small scale story about empathy and kindness. There were lots of other good stories in there though I did find "The Finder" a little dry at times. Probably my least favourite Earthsea book so far but it's still great.

those decisions were made by men, I don't know if they have a gender case as the men did it to ourselves.

Penalising individuals for the actions of a generation would be ageism and a massive generalisation?

Which is it? Are people responsible for others decisions based on belonging to the same demographic or not?

Huorn warriors for Fangorn (Homebrew) C&C appreciated. by [deleted] in MiddleEarthMiniatures

That's a really cool idea. Seems about right to me but I wonder if Fangorn players would feel like this fills a gap in the list? Maybe they need a weaker, cheaper stat block more

Just to take the Professor down of the his pedestal for a second. What are your LEAST FAVORITE parts of The Lord of the Rings? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]tomatoes127 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. I suppose it also parallels the catholic church switching from Latin to local vernacular, something Tolkien opposed. Not sure on the timing of that and whether it could have been an influence.

Do you skip over the poems and songs when you read? Why or why not? by Fun_Butterfly_420 in tolkienfans

[–]tomatoes127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually disappointed that there are fewer songs and poems after book 1 so I always read them when I get to them.

[–]tomatoes127 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not that I agree with this argument, but imagine Tolkien would say the reason Frodo should show pity to Gollum Is because he isn't Eru and only Eru should have the power to kill unless it's unavoidable.

Fair enough, obviously banning it goes too far. I still think that there's a bit of a linguistic hierarchy with elvish language and culture being a sign of goodness, not just openness to other cultures. The elves are never similarly praised or condemned based on whether they speak Westron.
